injured rider at croom and fire department not having the equipment to work

me and the family were camping at croom this past weekend and on sunday in the am we went out for our last run befor packing it in and came across a injured rider about 600 yards from the camp ground as an 11 vet of the fire services in maryland I stoped to help he had a badly broken leg when I asked if anyone had gone for help he told me that someone called 911 well over an hour ago befor I had found them after checking him over some the first paramedic arrived with only basic supplies. no back board or anything really needed (due to bad info on the inital call for help) he called for meds and back board and so on after another hour or so we had to send several other riders in our group to get the other emt because they got lost trying to find us. I asked the paramedic if they had a gps and a atv to my surprise he said no they dont have one (a gps or atv) to make this story short it took over three hours to get the injured rider out to the waiting ems crew vital time lost thank god this was not serious ie:life threating injuries
you would think that with all the money taken in at croom in sticker sales and camping fees they could provide the local fire department with a little help no ranger even showed up to help the fire department he just sat in his truck in the campground
thank you to all the other riders for helping bring in the help and to the young kid for providing his atv to help transport the injured rider out of the woods
I think everyone who rides there should contact the state at protest this I spoke to the fire cheif after this and he stated he as asked the state for an atv like a mule or rino and a gps to be stored at croom for emergency use and they dont think there is a need and wont allow the funds???

I was there sunday, one of the rangers asked me if i knew where the rider was, which i didnt, i rode around a lil looking to see if i could see him, but i couldnt see him anywhere, but suposably there were 2 wrecks and they had to call in an ambulance both times(atleast thats what the ranger said when i was cleaning up at the end of the day). It was definly dangerous out there this weekend, the mud made it really slick in alot of areas.

One of my close friends brike his left leg and left wrist there 2 months ago. We had to take the paramedics back in the woods on our quads. After they worked on my friend they loaded hom on the back board. I was elected to pilot the 250EX that he was strung across with paramedics on either side trying to snake through the woods. It was a pain in the butt. If they would of had a mule of something of that sort we would have been better off. It was about 1 1/2 hours from the time he wrecked until he was in the helicopter.

I am a Lt. Paramedic in IRC. Here is a good suggestion. We use a Kawasaki Mule. It goes almost anywhere, has good power, and most of all has a bed...we put the back boarded patient right in the back, strap them in, and can even treat the patient as we go.
Just my two cents worth..I cant belive they dont have the equipment for an area like that..it is thier responsibility. They could fill out the right grant papers, and get grant money that would pay for it. This is an issue that should be pushed!!! ATTN all tax payers in this region...LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for bringing this up.

croom is really dangerous. all the trails are two way trails and on the weekend you will be riding and some newbie will run in front of you. I love it there, the land is great but it needs to be redesigned. I would love to redo croom make it safer and more fun.

money to get mules for paramedic's to help out atv riders, they(government) don't want to help us. they want to make sure we keep losing lives so they can close down all the riding lands and ban atv's. we are the scum of the earth. hasn't anyone noticed that everytime something bad happens on any land private or public atv riders are to blame. they don't care about us.

We had a big group that time. That wasn't us you were thinking about.

Croom is getting over populated. But it's the states fault considering the lack of places to ride. I used to go there over 10-14 years ago and I never been there when there was that bad of a accident. Now ever other time I've gone I either have seen an ambulance or or the Medivac. If they are not going to give us more land then clear out some more places to make new trails in Croom like in the far back. -Mark
