Any bird hunters?
«
on:
October 13, 2005, 10:25:58 PM »
Any quail hunters? Quail season opens soon, and I have been scouting some areas in Ocala. Since this is the last year we will be able to take atvs to good spots, does anyone want to hit a few when the season opens? My dog doesn't honor yet, but I want to rectify that this year. Lets get the dogs out and see what we can find!

ya that sounds cool, i'd definitly like to see some pic's. I myself am a softy, i was brought up by a bunch of women so i couldnt and wouldnt shoot at anything i didnt think i could kill quickly with as little suffering as possible. call me whatever, i just wouldnt want to be that animal when a bullet from a .30-06 went through my stomach. lol.
The guy wants to shoot some birds. Leave it at that! If you want to wine about killing animals start your own thread so we can tear you a new one. If a bullet does not do the job maybe you would like to see a coyote tear up a whole covey of quail. I am sure that is a humane way to take them out of there missery. Besides quail tastes good!
Let me know when you are going shooting. I also like to go snipe hunting down here in palm beach county.

I bird hunt at least 4-5 days per month from November through February. I lave in two weeks for a five day pheasant hunt in Iowa. I love it!! We hunt both penned and wild quail throughout the cooler months. This year we've ordered 1200 penned birds to put out, inclusive of a few Chukkar.
We've been training a new puppy since April. He's a German Wirehair. Great hardy dog suitable for all birds. We also hunt Shorthairs and the occasional Visla and Britanny.

LEAVE MY THREAD ALONE!!! POST THAT CRAP SOMEWHERE ELSE!!
wilburz- Thanks for gettin' my back.
Anoriginal, wilburz-
If you guys want to go, lets discuss it in PMs.
Anoriginal, I'd like to see your dog work. I've got 3 GSPs, a Brittany and an English Setter. Only 1 GSP hunts. He was profe$$ionally trained, is force broke to retreive, but doesn't back. Easy with that pup on the gunfire- I ruined my Setter by starting her too early on gunfire. Where do you go in IA? I've been there 4 times. I am going to WI for Ruffed Grouse in 3 weeks. I am going to shoot skeet today for practice.
A hunter safety course is a great way to get started in hunting.

I fly out on the 28th and return on the 2nd of November. Great time. All wild birds, no early release or penned. We hunt south west IA near Lenox and Stringtown.
The Wirehair is doing great. The gunfire doesn't bother him. We started him on .410 and then moved to .28 and .20. He's doing real good now that he's old enough to get real excited and aggressive.
Grouse hunt sounds fun. I've hunted them in NC a few times. Supposed to go to Canada this year for Woodcock. We'll see. Only so many weekends in a year. Between deer hunting all over the place, quail hunting, work, etc. I really have to pick, choose and plan my trips.

The only way you could conceivably go on that trip would be to take ME along as shooting instructor/coach/ego-booster/luggage carrier. PM me with details as soon as possible. Seriously, go on the trip. Your skills won't matter. The fun and experience of the trip are what's important.
Ask at a local gun shop if there's a place to shoot skeet. Make time and practice. Shoot once a week until you go. Use a light target load. Follow through. Make sure your gun has a good recoil pad. Before your trip, get a Browning shirt with a Reactar pad and take it with you on the trip. I have one and they work GREAT!
Make sure you take me with...er, I mean tell me all about the trip.

Quail season opens Nov. 12, a Friday. I will be in Wisconsin until the 15th, probably. A day or two to recuperate, maybe hunt Ocala Friday the 19th? Who's in? How about Spacerider? Will you be back from the honeymoon by then? Anoriginal? wilburz? Moose?

Hey now, I'd like to see some pic's of that Belgium!!! That is one REALLY sweet gun you got there, and worth some big $$$$. I've shot one once, awhile back,it was a nice balanced gun but kicked the hell out of me.. ..As for quail hunting in florida I'd rather take a drive up to GA and go to a plantation.BUT!! I do know of a place where there is whole mess of Quail. Only problem is you can't hunt out there.. Alot of people from this site have been there to,and thats underhills. I was out their last sat around 8:00 A.M and DANG!! Quail were jumping up all around me.. Seen more Quail out there in one day, then I've seen in the whole state. Antwho post some pic's of that Belgium if you can..

Not sure if I would want to go bird hunting while deer season is in full swing up in ONF. Come on down here with your camper and we can round up some snipe out at JW Corbitt?

Where's Corbett? Neither I nor my dog has ever seen a snipe.
<Picturing in my mind, me and the dog walking in the woods, calling "HERE SNIPE, HEEEEERE SNIPE!">
The areas I am looking for quail are open wiregrass fields with few trees. Not typical whitetail habitat. Nonetheless, I will avoid areas where vehicles are parked.

JW Corbitt managment area is in western palm beach county off of 710. Lots of snipe out there. Very fun to shoot at. They hang out around the muddy edges of ponds and stuff.

Kurt appreciate the advice, only problem here is like anywhere else .You don't
go to someone's property without permission. My wifes family has some nice
fields but are now full of cows.My dad has about 60 acres but it was planted
in pines about 20 yrs ago and are quite thick now.Any way I'll get there some
time.I dont fish much but I didnt gripe when I won a trip with some guys from
work to the bass pro shops lodge at Welaka.
