Did anyone see this? Canada has passed some very strict new laws:

New fines for bad ATV riders
Last updated Jul 15 2005 04:09 PM NDT
CBC News

Riders of all terrain vehicles better beware: the province has brought in strict new rules and fines as of July 15.

The regulations include steeper fines for not wearing a helmet, up from $200 to $400, and doubling the fine for careless driving to $1000.

PROVINCE OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR: New safety regulations for ATVs
Keith Kennedy, the manager of an ATV dealership in Corner Brook, says he welcomes the changes.

He hasn't seen any decline in ATV sales leading up to the new rules and the sales of helmets has been brisk. He says he likes the idea of the new rules because it makes riders and parents of underage riders accountable for their actions.

In 2003, five deaths and 50 injuries were related to all terrain vehicle injuries. Those injuries including an average of a dozen children under the age of 14 who are hospitalized each year.

New regulations for ATV operators
Only people 16 years of age or older can operate adult sized ATVs.

Fourteen and fifteen year olds can operate smaller ATVs that have an engine size of 90 cubic centimeters but only under adult supervision.

No one under 14 years of age can operate an ATV. Some exemptions to the new age requirement will continue to apply in northern Labrador pending further consultation.

A one-time registration fee for ATVs is increasing from $20 to $50 to cover the cost of a safety awareness campaign on the proper use of ATVs, and to provide for more visible licence plates.

A 12-month amnesty on the payment of provincial sales tax for the re-registration of used ATVs, which were not previously registered upon sale or transfer. This is meant to encourage owners to update the registration information of their ATVs to assist with enforcement.

New fine schedule
The maximum fine for careless driving of an ATV will increase from $500 to $1000.

The fine for not wearing a helmet has been bumped up from $200 to $400.

The fine for driving an ATV while impaired will increase from $500 to $1500 for a first offence.

I have ridden in Canada and  it is wonderful you can ride for hundreds of miles in one direction. The trail system goes all the way to Maine. You are also allowed on the road to go to restaurants, gas stations. hotels, etc.
I agree with many of the new changes to make it safer. You have always had to wear a helmet just some people don't follow the rules. Most people ride double with kids on the back. Almost everyone has a double seat on the bike and pegs for there feet. Riding in Canada is year round and has well maintained trails in all seasons.

Is this in Canadian Dollars? If so I can afford the fines.  Smiley

Actually I may be moving to Canada for half-year intervals running a lodge in the next few years.
