Hurricane Katrina Evacuees Land In Port Saint Lucie, FL

September 1, 2005

To All Who Can Help,

Late last night 2 New Orleans, LA residents arrived in West Palm Beach, FL after leaving the place they called home is gone. Dana and Doug left New Orleans on Sunday hours before the storm was to make landfall to head to Port Saint Lucie where they were going to stay with Dana’s friend Lori Orr until the storm passed. After driving for hours and hours to find a hotel they arrived in Birmingham, AL were they spent the night. Dana and Doug found a Marriott Hotel who had a vacancy at the steep rate of $180.00 a night, even thought the price was horrible, at 4 am all they wanted was a place to rest. They had little money, no credit cards and all they could salvage from their homes in a pick up truck. As if the hurricane was not enough to face, they got ready to head out on their trip to Port Saint Lucie only to walk out of their hotel room and find that Doug’s truck was stolen. In his truck were all of his construction tools he used to make a living and all of Dana’s pictures of her deceased mother. Everything they didn’t lose in New Orleans was stolen by a heartless person. So here are Dana and Doug in Birmingham, AL with no vehicle, no clothes and virtually no money to get to Port Saint Lucie. Delta Airlines flew them to West Palm Beach late last night. What I am hoping to accomplish is for our community to pull together and help someone who is in desperate need. Dana’s homeowners insurance is covered by Farmers Insurance and they are telling Dana that they will not give her ANY money out of her living allowance until they can get into New Orleans and confirm her flooded home (which is literally 6 blocks from Lake Pontchartrain) was actually damaged by the hurricane, which could take weeks or even months. Dana and Doug have nothing, no clothes, no shoes, no jobs not even a toothbrush. They are in desperate need of everything. They are having to start out from scratch. I have donated my travel trailer for them to stay in until they can figure out what is going to happen to New Orleans. We also need an electrician who would be willing to install a 220 electrical outlet in Lori’s home to power the trailer. Anything that this community can do to help them would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Heather Ellison

Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers and help. I know that they have absolutly nothing. I gave them the trailer (to use), soap, shampoo, and linens. Sadly God did not bless me with a small body so my clothes would fall off her and my husband is a 31-32 waist so he is no help either...LOL Basically anything we could donate they would appreciate.

Clothes:

Dana - tops m/l size 10
           paints size 8
           shoes size 7

Doug - Shirt XXL
           pants 36W 32 L
           shoe size 11 ½

I live in Fort Lauderdale. I have some size 14 shoes and some XL shirts if that will help. If there is a place I can drop them off or something you can think of. Maybe we can pull together and have a collection.

Heather as promised we have a good bunch of stuff (clothes for him, sheets, paper towels, soap, food, etc.)  I'll call you tomorrow at some point to come drop it off.  Maggie that's a good idea about having a meeting place.  I was thinking about that today.  A lot of people from my work were asking how to get the stuff up to you, granted they're willing to "give" but with the price of gas.....I don't think they're willing to bring it!  Know what I mean??  Anyhooo.....I'll call you tomorrow.  Tell them to hang in there....   Huh

Thank you everyone for you help. We have gotten the electric hooked up for the trailer and the local newpaper interviewed them and they made the front page. http://www.tcpalm.com/
I know they appreciate everyone who has thought of them.

I want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH to TRX450R_Racer AKA Frank and to the PURELOGICS. You have no idea how much Dana and Doug appreciate your generosity. Frank please let everyone at your job know how much they have helped. Lisa and Jonathan you do the same, It really shows how nice people are here in this group and I am so proud to be a part of it. Lake Mary Kid, I am sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I have been with Dana and Doug all day and have not been home. About the shoes everything is appreciated but Dougs feet would not fit in them. It is so nice of you to offer, just the fact that you are willing to help says so much. I understand that with the price of gas and the distance between alot of us it makes it unfeasible to donate AND I TRULY UNDERSTAND.  Again we have a great group here God Bless you all!

If my truck is running for the weekend I'll be heading over about an hour north of West Palm Beach from Sarasota.  I'm not sure where you are located though.  I have some clothes that are too big for me but I'll see what else I can put together.  I have so many t-shirts I haven't got room for all of them so I'll go through those.  Unfortunately I don't have any shoes but I'll see what I can come up w/ from what I've got.

Again my going over there is truck dependent.  What's the best way to get these to you if I have something?
