Tee Ball Coaches out there?

Well I just became a coach of a Tee ball team and I dont think I knew what I was getting into . So Calling any former or current coaches--- Any Ideas on what to do to keep the kids in order? I played baseball for years but never been a coach to a bunch of 5 and 6 year olds. Any Practice ideas to make it fun would be appreciated. any hints and tips would also help out. Thanks

I coached tee ball in the beginning of my coaching career. It is the easiest and funnest of all the ages I have coached.  Just keep it simple, fun and develop a personal relationship with each child.  They will never forget coach.  I have kids that I coached in teeball that are now 11 and they still call me coach.  Focus on defense and base running in the begining. Get each parent to volunteer or assign them a duty of some type to keep them involved. That will allow you to focus on the team and you won't be doing it all by yourself. Design some form of team building relay or game for the end of practice. This will be something they will wan't to earn at every practice and look forward too. Just be careful because you could get hooked on coaching and end up like me 7 years and counting of baseball and 2 years in football, which is my favorite now. Enjoy the experince now.  When you get to 10-12 years olds it get's very competitive and exciting! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Speaking from experience I can tell you that one of the hardest things is keeping their attention. First,I would recommend at least 2 asst. coaches. That gives you more man power to split the team into smaller groups so you can teach them the fundamentals of the game without having to spend most of that time getting their attention. Have each coach kinda specialize in a certain area.(hitting,fielding,etc...) rotate the groups out after short periods to keep the pace moving along so the kids don't get bored,just don't move too fast because they are in a learning process.Also,help from parents can sometimes be a welcome sight,as long as it is help and not criticism.Parents are quick to coach from the bleachers. Let the parents know that the kids are indeed their kids but when they are on the field,they are your kids and they need to be paying attention to you,not the "coaches" in the bleachers hollering out instructions. Just my 2 cents,hope it helps.
