the z400 cant compete with the 450s at all unless your factory. 400ex would be  the best choice.

well truthfully the 400EX cant run with the Z400 without work. and if the z400 ran with the 450 then there would be no need to have a 450. but stock to stock the yfz and z run neck in neck stock. you just have to do a lil more work to a z then the yfz but you also have more cc's.

well all i got to say is get the 400 it is one of the best handling quads made in my opinion.... and yes the z400 is a little edge over the 400ex but if u learn to ride 400ex then u can run with the z400. just my 2 cents

Stock for stock the YFZ will BLOW AWAY your Z400. My neighbor has a Z400. When I got my 450R he had a pipe, filter kit and of course rejetted. My 450R totally stock out of the box smoked him. So I know a stock YFZ will smoke a stock Z400, because a stock YFZ is faster than a stock 450R.

I would go with the 400EX it is a proven racer and you can buy anything for it. The only thing I don't like is they are both air cooled. Here in florida I would try to stick with liquid cooling. That is one of the reasons a Z400 and the new 450s are better.
