POLK COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Plans for an off-road vehicle park are in the works in Polk County.

If the plans come to fruition, ATV enthusiasts would have a safe and legal place to ride, which is becoming harder to find in the county.

"The land that before was available to ride on has either been turned into subdivisions or has just been fenced off and it's illegal to ride there," said Jack Terrell from the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council. "So, there's a real problem in getting places where people can ride."

The county is considering hundreds of acres of former phosphate land in the southwest part of the county for the park. Polk County's off-road advisory committee toured the property this week.

Terrell says the land is well suited for riders.

"It makes an ideal place where you've got changes in elevation, changes in terrain," Terrell said.

County commissioner Randy Wilkinson said the park could benefit the county's budget.

"These sort of ventures make money," Wilkerson said. "It should be all supported by the riders who come here and use it."

The 200-acre property is located on County Road 630, east of State Road 37. The deal would also give the county an option to acquire 300 adjacent acres in five years.

The county commission will consider purchasing the initial piece of property at its Wednesday meeting.
