recently my bike has started making a hard consistent clacking/chattering noise whenever its in 3rd gear, the harder i am on the throttle the louder it gets. it shifts easy and it seems to still hold the power alright though, just makes a bunch of noise. every other gear works flawlessly. the way i ride, 3rd is definitely the one i use the most. i never power shift, ever. does anybody know what needs to be replaced or what the common failure/ wear points are on these things? the bike is an 06.

sounds like it may have a tooth missing off the gear.

you realy think thats possible with a z400, its not a very powerful bike? it seems to get worse the more i use it. i just got back from croom and skip shifting from 2-4 constantly sucked ass. i used 3rd one time and it was so loud i was too afraid to use it again.

i thought about that, but that wouldn't explain why it only does it in one gear.

I have seen and fixed several Z400's with teeth broken in the transmissions
sounds like you have a few missing teeth on the 3rd drive gear

eh, maybe its time for a new motor if i ever get the money... i doubt dumping more time and money into this thing will be worth it, a big bore 2 stroke would be nice.

its not that much to fix it no need for a new engine I can repair that one cheeper then a replacement engine will cost. and you will know what you got if you get a used engine you never know how good it is or if its good at all till you buy it and put it in and if its no good then you just wasted your money

i don't know, it just seems like a waste to dump any more effort into that engine, i have always wanted more power and now is my chance. i found a 87 cr500 motor on craigslist for $300... i figure i could have it said and done for around $800. i think im just gona let her eat till she blows and maybe il have enough money by then.
