Ok so i got a linksys router and im running normal bellsouth DSL  ( yeah i know it sucks )   Anyway, i cant connect tonight. Only reason im typing this is because im running straight off the modem. Ive tried a 1min hard reset and holding the button. I know how to get the IP and go into the settings and all that but the problem im having is that when i go into CMD to get the IP it gives me some wierd IP that doesnt go with anything else i have and it doesnt work in the web browser. There is no default gateway or anything and the subnet just says 255.255.0.0

Anyone know whats going on. My brother said we had a power surge before i got home today so im thinking  that possibly the insides got reset or just baked to crap and its not doing anything right. Any help would be...well..helpful...

Thanks.

Power EVERYTHING down for at least 2-3 minutes.  PC, router, modem, the whole kit and kaboodle.  Then try turning them back on in this order:

1.  Modem (wait for it to settle down a minute or so)
2.  Router (again wait a minute or so)
3.  PC

If you do need to get a new router do NOT get this one:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8741356&type=product&id=1202648529060

I got that router a few days ago and had nothing but problems.  The software that came with it locked up multiple times during the install.  When I got it to work it the speed was spotty at best.  Then my speed was no different if I wired it or went wireless.  So I took it back.  My old router works fine I was just trying to speed it up a little.

Yep. You may have to do a connection "Repair" that works good also. Or 5 minutes with tech support.

Do you have the link light from the modem to router and from router to PC?

It sounds as if you need to access the router http://192.168.1.1 if all those lights are on.

You may also need to give your PC a static IP address to even access the router since you pushed the button, DHCP could be off..

Maybe powering everything off and back on will fix it.
