I personally prefer a thumb throttle. I never could get used to the twist, nor did I ever really feel comfortable with it in most situations. I have carple tunnel so I get thumb/wrist cramps really bad because of the thumb throttle. Not sure of what to do, I decided to spend $20 on a throttle extension. It took a little getting used to, but it made the cramps go away 100%. I can ride all weekend and not even have a cramp, hehe.
Not sure why you are wanting a twist throttle, but I hope I was of some help.

ill tell you from my personal experince that twist sucks.i was in some dirt in second gear, poped to third as i hit the street, and geuss what happend, the thing poped up on me like no tommorow so my first thought was to hold on tight ,well that turned out to be a big mistake.that 250r did a twelve oclock on me.you can geuss what happend from there.next thing i know is that im sliging on my back about 100 ft till i hit the stop sign that was nice enough to stop my slide.i learned a couple of things that day.1)dont ride a atv on the street.2)dont ride a atv in the street with a wife beater and shorts.3)it hurts to sit on a toilet with road rash on your a$$.so take this funny little as you will.but i would not do it.TRUST ME...............

To me i feel there isnt really a difference. I have a dirtbike that i haven't used in a while and the twist throttle gets kinda stiff right when you start to twist on mine but that could be because of the mud.

To me the twist is the only way to go. Grew up on dirt bikes. Never had any trouble with it. The thumb makes my thumb hurt bad due to breaks and dislocations. I also feel like the response is better. Are you riding trails or MX? If trails go with the half turn. If MX go with the 1/4 turn. The twist also makes me ride with my hands relaxed. the more relaxed you are the faster you ride. But you will not know untill you experiment.

I used to do lotz of mx and wanted to switch mine to twist but after you get in the goove and you ride a bit I like the thumb. I think its a personal preference thing.

In November, I broke my thumb, and most of the little bones in my hand/ wrist. As some of you know the YFZ thumb throttle is really hard to push. Once I got my cast off, I couldn't last a lap at the track without my thumb bothering me, so I switched to a twist. I gave it a hell of a try to get used to it. Put about 15 hours on it, 15 hours of track time. It was decent on smooth tracks, but braking bumps were a big no no, and I didn't feel right taking off and landing jumps. So, I decided to modify where the return spring sits in the carberator, and it made a WORLD of difference. If any of you have a YFZ or something with an FCR carb, and have trouble pushing, I'd be happy to help you make it easier. Feel free to pull me over at the track and feel how easy it is.

Funny thing is this weekend we were in ONF and I was talking to Susieblazer about putting a twist as my thumb was killing me.. so I was wondering if i should try the thumb extender first then try the twist...but I definately liked the input on this and welcome some more just before I read this I was gonna look online for both but decided to check the posts before I did....................good thing huh?

yes it is i have been having this problem since i first rode my bike and i just figured it was from the vibration from the 2 stroke i am use to a 4 stroke i might try the twist just to see but i wonder if you can get a weaker spring for the throttle? i have a 250r. anyone know?

so how did the extension help ?
To me, the extension was a life saver... and the best $20 I have spent on my quad. It did take an hour or so to get used to it, but it is well worth it in my opinion. I no longer get thumb cramps while riding and I no longer have to wear my wrist braces for carple tunnel/tendonitious after riding (which I would usually have to wear for 2-3 days after each ride).
The extension makes it so that you use your entire thumb and also the front part of your palm (base of thumb). It's awesome... and if you are curious...definately spend the $20 to give it a try... if you don't like it then it isnt a big loss.

it's all about personal preference, that's it. personally i have been riding a dirtbike for ever and i just got my quad, i HATE the thumb throttle. like i cannot stand it. the twist puts me in more control. as for the flip over deal my modified CR250 was a bear to keep down, that's why you keep a finger on the clutch.

definently thumb throttle i hate when you land a jump on a dirtbike or a quad with twist throttle and your wrist gets jammed with the thumb it is a lot rider friendly.

I ordered mine from a local shop. Le-Vinson or Triple_R_Cycle_Ski may be able to hook you up with one also.

Only complant I have about twist is when your starting it you have a tendency to give it throttle... but I guess yall have electric start. I've never had a problem with my wrist getting jammed??? Oh well I'm on a dirtbike might be diferent.
