OHV Recreation Management Workshop
Boca Raton, Florida
January 14, 2009
In recent years Florida has experienced an incredible increase in the recreational use of Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs). However, while the sport is growing in popularity there are limited public areas for people to legally ride on public land, particularly in south Florida. In 2002 legislation was passed creating the T. Mark Schmidt Safety and Recreation Act (Ch. 261, F.S.) to protect Florida's resources while providing the public with places to safely ride OHVs.
In the effort to find a cooperative way to offer more riding areas while protecting resources, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Forestry and the Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Advisory Committee (OHVRAC) is holding a special one day workshop for public agencies to address the issue of establishing legal riding areas for OHVs in south Florida. The workshop is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2008 in the Live Oak Pavilion on the Boca Raton Campus of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. Parking will be provided. The workshop is scheduled for 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
The purpose of this workshop is to conduct an educational forum with local, county, state and federal partners to address issues for the development of new OHV recreational areas, facilities and riding opportunities in south Florida. We recognize the importance of developing a grassroots initiative to help with the issue and to involve local governments.
Since we anticipate limited seating for this workshop we ask that attendees register in advance. If you have any specific questions pleased feel free to contact John Waldron, Forest Recreation Administrator at 850/414-9852 or
