its been proven kfx/z 400 is faster stock and modified.   i have kfx 400 with lil work and stock 400 ex said he could win i spun through 3rd gear and still took him by 4  bikes at the end. when we racd and i was stock and so was he i had him by about 2 or 3 bikes

x2 on whats said above, this is the for sale section... what the hell?

anyway, i voted z400 not just becasue i have one, its really not even a comparison. the z is just light years ahead of the honda, i wouldn't even consider them in the same class really. they are both nice bikes for sure, but realistically the z400 is just alot more advanced than that old air cooled 400.

Agreed, plus in addition with the liquid cooled system, the z/kfx/dvx is a dohc engine.

suspension is also superior on the newer z400s, the older ones without the resi shocks are still fairly nice, couldnt say if they are alot better than the 400ex but i would be willing to bet it still rides beter

It's leaps and bounds better, handles better, faster, all years have reverse, unlike the 400ex which only had reverse 05 and up. Suspension on 05 and up is superior like chevy1500 said.

Z/KFX....If there is no rider error.. Its really not that big of a difference, one mistake and the EX will take it. The Z only has one horsepower more stock to stock, the suspension and frame geometry + newer and liquid cooled is what puts the Z/KFX on top.. I really wouldn't say its as big of a difference as you guys make it seem like in a straight line drag, any other situation and you have a different story for the Z.. Just my .02

I'm not saying its wayyy faster on a straight, I am saying its a better overall bike, the ergonomics, suspension, handling, etc..

As far as reliability goes, I would have to give it to the 400ex. I know a few people that have 99 400ex's that have never had an oil change.

hp ratings seem to amaze people but they mean literally nothing. a stock obs chevy rated at 200hp will outpull a newer 300hp rated 5.3 because theres are such huge diferences in were the power is at and how useable it is for different situations, just an examples that comes to mind. the z will plain out roast a 400ex in every category, i wouldn't call them close to each other by any means.

EX (2x.x is stock)-
http://ctracing.com/trx400ex1.htm

Z/KFX (2x.x is stock)-
http://ctracing.com/z400_kfx4001.htm

Chevy, I know what you mean, however the power curves are relatively similar throughout the rpm range. I know a Z/KFX will take the win, and that it is a better, newer, more technologically advanced bike, i'm just stating the fact that they are both 400cc machines (well maybe minus a couple cc's to be correct) with similar power output.. Drag racing, is mostly all power and rider skill so if one of the riders mis-shifts or launches crappy, i'd say the other would take it..

Drag racing is such a goon sport. You can put an ignition kill so that when you shift at WOT, you dont have to let off the throttle or wait for your clutch to catch up to what you just did.

Take it to a track.. with turns.

But my vote stills goes for the z/kfx.

Comes down to the rider.
I've taken all kinds of 450s on the track with my 400, bu in straight lines they will blow me away.

Exactly. Power is nothing if you can't control it.

drag racing is fun, but it proves pretty much nothing as stated above. same goes for truck pulls, fun, but worthless.

i still think a z will own a 400ex in a drag race to the point were there could be rider error on the z400 and it still would win, it would be a fairly close race, but not that close.

back when i raced in the 400 class, My ex couldn't pull away from the z/kfx, but they never dusted me. Worse case, my fronts tires would be at their back tires. That little bit of extra horse power didnt help them in the turns though. Wink You have a liquid cooled engine, res. shocks in the front, seems to be the only advantages which might be enough for some. I'd take the reliability of the honda any day though. IF your a good rider, you don't need the fastest bike, you just need one that can hold its own and get the job done again and again...and again....and again..!

what a lame excuse from the 400ex owner! iv had my z400 for 3 or 4 years now without any problems. lol

im not saying the 400ex is a pile of crap or anything. having a preference of brand is fine, but come one, dont sit there and try and come up with a lame reason why it still must be beter in some way, kinda makes you sound like a sore loser...

My Z has been VERY reliable over the years.
I can understand why some of the aftermarket parts are starting to wear on me after years of hard motocross riding.

My 03 has had NO problems other then a broken sprocket.

my 05 has had more problems but they've been caused by aftermarket parts needing replacement after years lol.
