I'm in a bit oh a dilema i guess you could say. I had my quad running 155 main, 42 pilot, needle on the 4th positon and the slide would just go past 3/4 and stop. So obviously the main isnt working 100% but it ran as smooth as can be. People would tell me wow that thing runs absolutly perfect awesome job on it. Yeah well then I opened it up and adjusted the quad so it was 100% throttle it was running lean on top and stuff. I threw in a 158 main. It ran great just a slight studder if you revved it quick but it was minimal, I figured I was done jetting and I wouldnt be into my carb for awhile. Wrong I go on vacation and the quad was sitting for maybe 3 weeks without starting it. When I came back from vacation i wanted to hear it rumble again and just to keep it running every so often when i know i'm not going to be riding it start it up for a few minutes. I start it let it warm up idling for 3 minutes or so and shut it off to check the oil before i do some revving and stuff. Oil level is good ready to make some noise. I hit the gas quickly and it just shuts off. I start it up hit i again quickly but let off sooner and it wanted to cut out when I revved it quick. So now something isnt right. I cant imagine it being my main because when I did a top speed run with the 158 the plug looked perfect I dont think it could have been better. So I think maybe its lean I put the needle on the 5th and do the same and it got worse. I put it to the 3rd and it seemed better but still not right. Then to the 2nd slot and it ran without a studder but it didnt feel like it had the same power. I took it for a spin and it wouldnt wheelie in 2nd with me just hitting the gas. Now I dont know what to do. I'm about ready to take it and have it dynoed A/F tested for $35 or so. See how it is and adjust it and have another run. I rather not spend $80 in a day. Anyone have suggestions? I doubt my flywheel slipped so its not 6 degrees advanced and its like 4. It was on there tight ad torqued down

How old is the gas in the quad? You might want to drain it and put in fresh fuel.

the gas is probally now a month maybe a month and a half.  i dont think it would have gone bad that quick.  Maybe the gas from the station was older when i bought it?

will do.  I hope that was the problem because the only otheroption besides jetting and the gas going bad would be somehow my flywheel slipped and instead of being advanced 4 degrees its less.  I cant iumagine my flywheel slipping when it was torque down 94ft lbs i think it was.

if your main jet got a piece of crap in it it wont run right. i got a piece of sand or something stuck in a jet one time and it would absolutely not come out. i had to get another one. i am guessing that you already checked that but just checking. or try new gas too. if you kept the old gas in it it might be gunking it up every time you start it.

yeah i will take it apart and clean the main.  I used carb cleaner in the carb and where the needle is and blew all the stuff out with compressed air.  I havent checked the main to see if something got in there.  Wouldnt it have blown out by now though?

it was bad gas.  I smelled inside my tank and it smelled horrible and deffinately not normal gas like.  It smelled real strong and almost alcohal like idk how to explain it.  I smelled inside my brothers tank and our gas can and they smelled fine but mine had a different smell i even asked my dad.  I went and got new gas from another station and dumped the old out of my tank.  Put the new gas in and it was running lean from screwing with my jetting with the bad gas to make it run right, a quick needle adjustment and it ran better than ever.  Took it out and did quick blips of the throttle in 1st and 2nd the front tires went up imediatlety like they should.  I bought the gas at sams club about a month and a half ago, thy must have had older gas or something in the tanks when i filled up so it went stale.  Now i know what bad gas smells like lol

Everybody needs to remember we have the ethanol in gas now. If it sets more than few weeks it will phase separate, leaving water on the bottom then alchohol. You really have a problem in boats now..

how would you get water on the bottom of the tank from ethanol?  I thought ethanol is 100% alcohol and its mixed about 10% with the gas you buy.  Or is it not 100%?

Our gas now has around 10-15% ethanol mixed in with it. The ethanol draws moisture fast. It will cause phase separation. Do a search on it it is amazing. You do not get as good of fuel economy with the ethanol fuel either....
