Herculiner Truck Bedliner
«

Well after a few weeks of contemplating I decided to go for it. With an afternoon of your time it is really worth it. My dad had Line-X installed in his F-150 for around $400 I believe. I didn't feel like throwing down that kind of cash for a bedliner. I went to Autozone and picked up Herculiner for $89. I did some searching around on this site before hand and found out that this stuff was messy, and it sure is. If you decide to do this, make sure you tape and mask everything off, and wear long clothing, and gloves.
Here is a few pics of it in progress...
Here is the truck bed just after I pulled out the old plastic bedliner. Notice all of the dirt, and bare metal spots from the rubbing of the plastic bed liner.
With the help of my buddy, here it is almost all sanded up.
Here it is after the first coat.
I decided to do the bed rails as well, and was pleased with how it came out.
Here it is all taped up and ready for the second coat. The directions reccomend that you remove all taped off areas after the first coat, because if you let it dry, the tape will bond into the bedliner, and then you will have to use a razor to get it off. I didn't like the idea of gouges from a razor on the body of my truck, so I took the tape off the major contact areas, and taped everything again for the second coat.
Here is the finished product

Looks good. Hope it lasts for you. I did it to one of my trucks a few years ago and it wore off due to the sun and use in about a year and had to be redone.

Thanks KD!
I hope it holds up! The only thing it will see is the quad, won't be beating it around too much, so hopefully it will last. Atleast if it chips, you can just touch it up, If line-X or rhinolining chips the hole thing has to be re-done.

I have it on my truck and I know what he is saying it fades off and looks bad I was unhappy with it and know recommend that if interested in doing it to any truck go under the rail only not on it but it does work very good and no damage to it or the bed yet

not trying to be a d!ck, but i have herculiner in my bed and it sucks ass. it chips off as easy or easier than paint. i did all the proper prep too, sanded it all, wiped it down with acetone, even wore gloves, and it was a pain in the ass on the long bed. its better then no bed liner though. it looks good. you did a good job, how long did it take you.

So far so good for me. What all do you haul in it? Took me Friday afternoon, and Saturday morning to do. The only thing it sees is my quad, a few shoves/rakes, and little things here and there. If it keeps chipping up on you, spray on a flexible paints primer where it chipped, then touch it up with more herculiner. That otta do it for ya. How long have you had yours?

i don't touch it up because i don't really care what it looks like. i haul my quad, the golf cart and now a john boat. it mostly gets chiped from throwing the ramps into the sides, or the front of the john boat hitting the front of the bed. i have a bed mat to so the floor is covered.

alot people say herculiner sucks because they try to compare it to line x or rhino, but its apples and oranges. i knew the stuff was gona be weak, i just wanted it to look a little better and its better then no liner. for the price its alright stuff, but for the effort it takes to put it on, i don't think id do it again, at least not on a long bed. I have to say though yours looks allot better then mine.

It was sorta a pain to put it on in a way man. If it was winter it wouldn't be so bad. I lost a total of 5 pounds of just sweat on that Friday. I was thinking about throwing my bed mat in there, I just might do that. My father has line-x and it is far more durable than herculiner or rhino lining. If the Pentagon uses Line-X on its outer walls that should speak for itself. A long bed would have been a mofo. If you only used that single gallon, you probably didn't use enough which would explain your chipping. I know a guy who used it on his jeep, and it has lasted for 10 years. Some people have bad luck with it, some people good. So I am hoping it holds up for me. I also found that black krylon fusion matches it almost perfectly. If your herculiner hasn't faded away yet. I used it a little in the cracks and seems to hide the white from my bed. That is a cheap alternative to buying another quart of herculiner.

Yeah I bet, The full gallon that came with the kit just barely cut it for my 6 1/2 bed.

im fixin to buy a older yota and i want to do this to it. my friend did his ram and it looks awesome over a year later except for the bed rails. he didnt sand them and it didnt stick well. but other than that, it is awesome. yours looks good too. i am trying to decide wether linex is the way to go or this. looking at yours and my friends, id say this but then thinking bout the labor, linex seems better.

When are you planning on doing this? If in the middle of the summer your gonna sweat like crazy if your outside. For $400 it is worth the labor in a way. Line-X is the best product though. Just make sure you prep it properly and you should be good to go man. But if you have the money and are willing to spend the money to have it done professionally, then why not? Line-X will also give you a free touch up after one year if you need it. My dad had his done at Yipes in Ocala I believe.

if all you haul is your quad and your mostly shooting for looks, then herculiner is fine. but line x is a superior product, you get what you pay for in this case.

That looks really good man. Especially since you did it yourself. I have to touch up the rhino liner in my truck, the bed rails are a little chipped up.

Thanks Klutch. So far so good guys. A little faded, but it still looks good, and I have been beating on it.
It's been a little over a month.

thats awesome! i love this stuff lol, I have line x in my dads f350 and it has been awesome! the only issue with it was when it went back to ford to get repainted after hurricanes, ford cut the bolts out of the line x in the bed and sprayed some diffrent stuff over the bolts so they wouldnt rust and its a completly diffrent color, like a faded gray. Thats the only issue we have had with line. I actually just bought the kit from wal mart that was plstikote or something of that nature and did the inside of my jeep as line x wanted $700 to do it and we had to prep it. The plastikote kit was only $45 so why not take the risk on it? So far, its been about a month and i havent seen any issues with it so far! holds up awesome, i havent had annything major in it but it is in my foot wells and i dont notice any parts that are rubbing off, i have had my dogs in the back with all their weight and long fingernails and didnt hurt it at all...
