Ok tonite I started the bike ( 99 banshee) up cause 1 of my friends wanted to ride , SO i started the bike up let it warm up for a good 2-3 mins .. Well my buddy got on and went haulin ass down the road ..up the to the end of the block
3/4-1 mile or so well when he came back I got on turn the fuel off and ran the bowls out . park it in the garage. and after I shut it off it smelled weird and smoke was comming out of the exhuast like 3-4 mins later is this uncommon ?? I think the small was maybe brake but not sure cause I'am sure he was on them hard ..or mayb from where his pants where touching the pipe??

any ideas would be great ?

Thanks In Advanced !

sometimes you will have smoke coming out of one or both pipes when you ride it Wide Open for a good stretch.  Sometimes that is fromt he cylinder leaning out, not getting enough fuel.  Most likely just from not being rode alot.

Well that explains that and probably the smell them , usually when I ride I dont stay wide open for as long as he did .. Like I say he went 3/4-1 mile or so wide open all the way there and all the way back .. Does this mean that the bike needs to be re-jetted
Cause I just put the FMF's on it not to long ago and didn't re-jett THOugh my plugs looked good according to my clymers man.

Any help would be great .. I would like to learn more about the jetting process I just dont want to do it all by myself and screw something up I would rather have someone help me who has done it before !

I'am not sure I've never jetted the bike ..

I've never had this probelm until last night though ..

Though , I'am going to try this because I bought the pipes used and I dont know when the last time was that they where repacked ..

Quote
Your describing your packing burning up. After a lot of oil build up on the packing, a long high rpm rip down a long straightaway will cause the packing to catch on fire inside of your silencers. It will sit there and smolder until lack of oxygen causes it to burn itself out. Pull your silencers and repack them.

It is possible since you decided to ride the bike with the fuel off to dry out the carbs you ran the motor lean right before it shut off. Running an engine lean will make it very hot so that’s probably what that smoke was just smoke leaking out the exhaust port and out the silencer. Wink

Just remember when you turn off the gas to run the bowls out kill the motor before they are empty or you will run it lean every time you do it .

What I usually do is ..  Start it .. turn the gas off... drive it to my shed that is give or take 100-120ft away ..

I dont usually let it die , though it has a couple of times
