A stripped gear is very unlikely. I would pull the side cover and look at it. Does it turn the motor? Does it spring back?

when i rebuilt my XR, i had to take the side cover off cause i dropped the cam chain down there and couldnt reach it any other way. when i did that, the spring came off and the kickstart gears all fell out. well, the spring isnt in there very good and it took me a few tries to get it back on right. when i put it back on wrong, it wasnt coming back up and it wouldnt move very far. so id check the spring. and get a service manual to see how to put it back on. it requires alot of pressure in the XR.
