Riding in Residential Neighborhood

I have a question for ATV riders, and would greatly appreciate your honest feedback. I am one of those neighbors of folks who ride their ATV's next door like they are in the forest. They've torn up their yard and have had upwards of 5 ATV's running at once - both child size and adult. The noise and property destruction is driving me and other neighbors crazy. We have one acre lots. What once was a very nice neighborhood is driving some folks to sell. They know it, but continue to ride as if they are the only ones around. We are not trying to be insensitive, and all have friends with ATV's but they take them to appropriate places to ride. We feel it is people like this who are giving responsible ATV riders a bad name.
My question is this - is residential riding customarily an accepted practice to avid ATV riders? Thanks in advance for your responses.

They could quit riding and move out. Then rent there house to a couple of mexicans, which means 50 mexicans. I rather have the family of atv's.

Maybe if the STATE gave us more riding area they wouldn't have to resort to driving in there yard. That is what we paid for in registration fees & sales tax on these machines.

The bottom line is that your neighbors are dead wrong. They should be riding in appropriate areas. Have you tried talking to them? Of that doesn't/didn't work then I would call the police everytime I saw them riding in the neighborhood.

to answer your question, no it is not an accepted practice for law-abiding riders.
I live very near downtown Orlando and every once in a while I will drive a quad around the neighborhood once or twice to dry it off after washing, but I keep it very quiet and never ride through anyone's yard, and of course never at an inappropriate time.
Most of the ATV riders you would meet, especially on this site would probably follow along with these basic rules.

Have to disagree with ya on this one Da_Mtg_Man but if i owned an acre of property (which I do) and I wanted to ride my 4 wheeler in my yard (which I do) and tear up my own yard then by golly this is still America and it is my (their property) now if the neighbor hood had restrictions then so be it then I wouldn't do it, sounds to me as if they are in a rural environment...don t get me wrong but if i lived in one of these neighborhoods that the houses are so close you can hear your neighbor fart then of course I wouldn't do it either.

if they are keeping it on their property that they own then i see no harm in it. but if it is a daily routine then that would be annoying. everyday would be too much. i got this fpl field thats actually public land behind my house that i ride for maybe 15 min about every two weeks just to give my some movement if it hasn't ran in a while. also after i wash it i go for a lap that takes maybe a minute so the grass cleans the tires a bit. i don't go in there everyday though cuz i wouldn't want to hear a bike tearing it up for hours on end everyday either. that would be annoying. i had a guy stop me once and argue that it was private property and that there were no trespassing signs up. i told him to show me just one and i would stop riding. he continued to argue so i gave him my phone to call the cops (i even dialed it myself lol). when the cops got there they said i wasn't doing anything wrong. if he hadn't been a prick i would have told him that i was just giving my bike some exercise and that i was finishing up. i've lived here for ten years and never had a problem. on the contrary when some of my neighbors see me they come out and make conversation with me and i take their kids for a ride too. this guy had just moved in to the neighborhood and i guess was frustrated that day. he actually apologized to me a few days later when i was out front my house. bottom line is i don't ride anywhere that i can't defend myself in.

I agree with Can-AmGator. This is America, If I want to ride my wheeler in my front yard then Im going to do just that. It's private property and perfectly legal.

Maybe if we annoyed all of our neighbours with our atv's they would call our gov. officials and complain and then we could get our designated riding area's. The gov. sure doesn't listen to us.

What 55+ TP do you live in?
If it does not brake local laws. He can ride 8am to 10pm.
If your a good neighbor you will ask him to cut down the noise/hours or riding. I he is a good neighbor he should limit the riding a bit.

I live in the estates and it would not bother me if someone tore up their own land and rode all day long the only thing that might bother me is a loud exhaust at night, but I choose to live in the estates with no deed restriction for that very reason.... so I can have a little more privacy. And with that said I wouldn't move right next to someone in town and expect to ride all day either. It goes both ways.

I am reading the post as a residential neighborhood. If it is out in the country then it is a different story. Regardless, they still need to be respectful neighbors.
Now, Let me ask this, and answer it honestly. What hrs of the day are they riding? Also, is it the city or rural?

I think I would like to expound on my earlier statement; Again as long as there are no neighborhood restrictions and they are big enough lots to ride on and there is no threat of (hurting, damaging etc. other peoples property or persons) then go right ahead....that being said I do ride in my yard probably 2 - 3 times a month especially when we haven't been riding in a while...I do keep my riding slow to trail speed no donuts, no excessive speeding or anything like that and we only ride for about 30 min. tops. But; If i rode everyday hours at a time I wouldn't blame my neighbors one bit to be PO'd
and We only have Ute's) no load mufflers or such (we do try and be respectful). Let me ad a caveat...if I had neighbors that rode everyday with loud pipes, riding recklessly etc. in their own yard are not I'd be PO'd as well (but since it's not against the law??). I would like to now from this first time poster/lurker/cloaked individual is this person or persons just riding in their yard or the whole neighborhood it looks like you said both???
by the way: I have one neighbor that likes to burn S%$T all the time as long as the wind is blowing the right way I could care less but when it's coming our way it sure is a PITA!! We have some that like to shoot firearms at all hours...some that shoot fireworks they don't need a holliday??? We even have some that party all night in their back yard with the music..stringy lights brighting up the whole hood bla bla bla (Cant we all just get along)

Unless you're an absolute moron who really has no concern about how bad you make the rest of us look, you shouldn't ride in a
residential neighborhood
. I don't care if it's not restricted, or not against the law, etc. You shouldn't do it. It's very bad PR for the ATV community and if you're doing it, and you know it's not welcome by your neighbors, you're part of the problem.
End of discussion.

I live in a rural area, every lot is 1 acre or more. Our family owns approx 12 acres all running together. I also live next to a sheriff. My kids ride 3-4 times a week on our property. My drx's are pretty loud, but never a peep from the neighbors. They are always shut down at dark. Across the road is a huge strawberry field, they start lighting explosives every morning when the fields are in full bloom to scare off the birds. That really sucks on the weekends after a long night & you want to sleep in. I moved to the country to avoid deed restrictions on my life & I deal with the things that come with it. If my neighbors ever asked me to take it easy I would try to compromise, especially if the sheriff gets a night shift or something, I know he has and he has never said a word. He is a friend of the family & if it bothered him I know he would say something. Some people just have to bit*h about something to be happy.
If this person is in a rural area, which we dont know, then they need to deal with it or politely ask the neighbor to go a little easier. I know one day I plan to build my kids a small track out here, but I am always respectful of my neighbors & definitely would not allow them to run at night.
Curious needs to clear things up a little otherwise he/she is clearly a troll trying to give us enough rope to hang ourselves & some on here have already obliged.

My boss built an MX track on his one acre lot next the house. It was built so we would be legal and left alone. I've been riding there weekly for about five years. The track is completely surrounded by houses and we've never had a problem. We only ride on weekends and yes it does get loud. So I am left with two choices. Either ride illegally or become a nuisance.

We are located outside of city limits but we are a deed restricted community. We think our board members are afraid of this family. They ride all hours of the day, even into the night at times. I don't there has ever been one weekend, except when they were away, that they don't ride. It makes it impossible to enjoy being outside or even think of entertaining. This has become a very divisive issue within our community, and as I do more research, I see that it is not isolated to our neighborhood, town or even state. It seems that on a national level this is definitely a "hot button" issue. We only want the ability to enjoy our property as much as we did prior to this family moving in. All attempts to get them to be respectful neighbors have only incited them to ride more, and create as much noise as possible. It's really very sad.
Thank you to everyone who replied!
