Camps At Holey Lands

How many of you guys know how i could go about setting up a camp at holeylands. I've rode my bike out there and it seems pretty cool to have a place set up out there.But I'm sure the land has to be passed down from generation to generation, but I'm not 100% sure.

Last I heard they are on 20 year leases, but it's a generation thing.  I dunno how it works.

The camps are owned fee simple for the most part. Very few are limited to a life estate (ie. - one generation). You cannot set up a camp unless you own the property. Moreover, even if you own the property you cannot set up a new camp unless there was a camp existing on the property in the past. Even then, it is very difficult and you must meet all current building codes.

The majority of the existing camps are grandfathered in and do not have to be brought up to current code.

I sure don't. However, I know there are people on this site that are associated with the camps. Maybe one of them can help you.

If you're polite, introduce yourself correctly and don't come empty handed, I wouldn't be surprised if you find someone to host you from time to time.

I was there a few eeks ago and i ran into one of the FWC guys and i asked him about camping he said it was ok at the pump station(just watch out fot the gator he been fed by humans and he will approach you) and along the power lines where ther is an opening on the west side of the road.

Are we still allowed to ride there? I'd like to go soon. How is it for sport quads right now? I guess dry?

I have been told by one of the camp owners that a new camp cannot be built unless there is an existing well head.  DNR will not allow the camp to be built if there is no existing well and they're not allowing any new wells to be drilled.  As far as camping, lots of people camp out by the pump house.  My family and I camped out there for a couple nights last week.  The weather wasn't bad; mid-60s night, mid-80s day.  Only had bugs at sunset for about an hour.  Of course, life was pretty comfy inside my motorhome.     One quick bit of advice.  Bring your own fire wood.  FWC gave me a stern lecture about collecting firewood.  Outside of that, make sure you have your green sticker, a proper flag (the pennant flags won't cut it anymore - must be 11x12 and 6 feet above the seat) and some common sense.  The FWC guys I met with said the end is coming soon, possibly before summer.  The idiotic antics at the bridge and litter are going to cost all of us one of the most unique riding areas any of us could ever hope for.  It's a damn shame and the ironic thing is, the people who are the most guilty will be the ones crying the loudest.

We went last Sunday.  I didn't have any probems on a Vinson 500 with ITP mud lites.  My son rides a Raptor 700 with mudlites and he got stuck alot but we had a great time.  We saw quite a few sport quads out there.  We made it about 3 miles south of the camp with the blue tarp on the roof and had an intense encounter with a large gator.  My son says he's ready to trade his 2006 Raptor for a UTV if anyone is interested.

I agree its a great place to ride. People keep %&cking it up and we her in south fla get screwed. When will you be camping there again i would love someone to ride there with and maybe pitch a tent next to if its ok..

Well heads have absolutley nothing to do with it. It's a matter of private ownership and being grandfathered in. However, nothing is to stop them from exercising their right to eminient domain and taking back the private properties as well.

Just relaying what the owner of Camp #21 told me 6 days ago.  Since his family has owned that camp for nearly 40 years, he might actually know what he's talking about.  He related a story about a camp down near the buggy bridge that had burned years ago.  Someone located an old timer that still had a copy of the deed.  The deed was taken to DNR and they told them there had to be an existing well on site before they would allow the camp to be rebuilt.  This guy and his friend have been trying to locate the well head for a couple of months but it's still too wet out there.  Not my words; his.  I suppose one of us could prove the other wrong by contacting DNR to verify the story but it really doesn't mean that much to me.  I'm just relating a story I was told by someone who already owns a camp out there.  For whatever it's worth.  In any event, the camps that are there are all that are ever going to exist, unless a deed and well head can be located from some long forgotten camp.

Again, the well heads have nothing to do with it. Never have, never will. Many camps have no well and no septic.
