Author Topic: has anybody ever ported a head on here?  (Read 3624 times)

i am going to port my 05 polaris predator 500 head sometime and was wondering how difficult it is. ive heard that its easy from some and its ridiculously hard from others. any advice or tips, i will probably do it when the season ends just in case $hit hits the fan.

Its not a matter of it being hard there is a science to it. It is all it the air and fuel flow. It is not as easy as everyone thinks. It may look real easy but if you do not know what you are doing or looking for you can really trash your head.

Buy a file and some over sized drill bits and go at it. For maximum flowage make sure a gerbil can pass through the port runners. Cheesy

ill just seal it up with him in there too and see how it runs. who knows maybe the gerbel will like it.lol

I know you want to go faster with your Polaris, but honestly you are just going to be adding problems to your bike.

A faster bike typically wont make you faster in the woods. I've seen many bikes NOT start at the line and have to be pushed off because of modded motors. Unless you have lots of money to keep rebuilding, or you have great mechanical experience to keep checking things, I suggest you look elsewhere for speed.

With a 500, you should be pretty quick in the motor department already.

My stock 450 got me to B class with just suspension(and I was competitive). If you haven't ridden a quad with suspension, it is like night and day smooth.

ya i know im trying to make something work here im not trying to make it over all faster cause it has plenty of power, im just trying to improve the lower rpm ranges, quicker acceleration will help in the woods obviously. wat im trying to do is find a new setup that will work better..good acceleration, more torque, i got good handling and little vibration so thats not in the way and a soft ride. which there is an aftermarket suspension on my quad and i called to see how much it would be for a re-tune i think it was gt racing and it was too much for me. im 16 so i dont make alot of money at all and i by all my own parts&fees so that takes up alot of my money and i put a whole bunch of stuff on there recently so that costed a pretty penny but i love it. i want to do this as a career cause i can finally race in sanctioners for the past couple months because of my bike size, i used to race just private little  track deelios or what not but now that aint the case.

dont do anything your self lol send it to some body that has experience with polaris. have you tried different gearing i mean i race mx in the b class with a stock ltr its not all about the motor its your experience and how to make the bike work for you.

ya i know i got a 13t front sprocket so played with the gearing through that. i know its mainly the rider im just playing with it to see what i can do.

If the 13 tooth in the front is smaller than stock, also go up a tooth on the rear sprocket.  A Polaris and Suzuki are diffent machines no doubt. Dropping a tooth on the front and going up a tooth on the rear makes a big diffence getting out of the hole on the Suzuki.  A different rear sprocket is a cheap experiment to try.

Forget about porting the head.  Save up to have GT Thunder work your suspension.  It is a night and day difference.

thats what im thinking ill just save up for a little bit and send it to them if i cant figure somehing out myself.
