COLLIER COUNTY: ATV riders may soon have legal places to ride in Collier County. But riders say the solution may be more dangerous than it’s worth.

ATV riders all over Collier County are frustrated because they still can’t ride their ATVs anywhere but their own property.

"I would want them to let us ride back out in the south blocks," said Logan Ace.

The county has been trying to help – and that help may have finally arrived.

"This is just one step forward," said Jim Coletta of Collier County Commissioners.

The transportation division found three unpaved roads that may be best for ATVs.

But because there are only three roads for what may be thousands of riders, riders themselves aren't so sure about it.

"If you get 20, 30 bikes on a small area, its going to be accident after accident after accident," said Stacie Alleman.

"If there's a three way, and there’s 20 bikes coming that way, that way, and that way, that’ll be a big head on collision," said Ace.

In its report, the transportation division found ATVs may be able to use:

An area in the southeastern part of the county on a five mile stretch of Wagon Wheel Road
More than ten miles on Jane’s scenic drive in the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve
27 miles along Patterson Boulevard in the Picayune Forest, the area which used to be known as the south blocks.
County commissioners are going to weigh their options Tuesday to see what is safe, practical and cost effective.

"That’s one of the things we'll have to work on, but the thing is, if we do nothing, then we're no better off than we were before," said Coletta.

"It’s going to be clustered, and it’s not going to be fun. It’s going to be more hazardous than fun," said Alleman.

Even though the transportation division did the study, they are not recommending it to county commissioners to pass.

Might be the perfect opportunity to work on a 'One Way' trail system...
