We went to big scrub on Sunday, Wow what a great place to ride. Sorry didn't get no pics was having too much friggin fun to stop and take pictures  Grin.

We did find the big sinkhole bout 3/4 mile from camp and had a blast there, went up and down some other trails but was too afraid of getting lost to go too deep  Sad.

Does anyone know of any other cool places to go there? I was told about a lake about 5 miles from camp but didn't make it that far. I would like some long flat places to let er rip.

The whoops on the main drag got a little old after a while, my arms are beat today, i've heard the farther from camp you go they aren't as bad, how far do you have to go? Does everyone here park at Big Scrub? I noticed alot of parking along the roads.

Only drawback i can think of if the dang road, 588 is a bit rough!

All in all my wife, daughter and myself had a GREAT!! time.

Glad you had a good time FLSnake. I like Scrub a lot. I usually just park under the powerlines a few hundred yards outside Scrub. I always meet new people each time I go. I know there is a lake about 5 miles west on the lines but it restricted. There are lakes/ponds all over really. Best thing I have found is find main trail leading off the powerlines and just keep going straight on it that way its easy to go far and not get lost..lol I like to use a Topo map website to look before I go each time http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=17&n=3213939&e=426233&s=100&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25  If you click on that link Big Scrub is about center and you can adjust the scale to see it closer.

getting lost??? i love that place, i go about once a month, sometimes more. and yes there are lakes, and clearings, bears, deer, etc. the best riding i have seen is to north of crub, but a good ways west, and then the same again, north but a good ways to the east. best thing to do to avoid getting lost, is to find a trail, ride it back and forth a few times, then take it and take one of the turns, most of them will eventually bring you back to where you started if have at least some sort of sense of direction. it is a huge place, one guy i was with has a bike with an odometer/trip meter, we rode 72 miles, and that was only two trips, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. its always a great time. the further south you go the more horses you will find (and west too by doe lake) so stay to the north, you have more fun and safer too.  BILL

I was there on Monday.....My arms and back are beat from the whoops, but I found Blue Grotto, and a cool mud hole and huge sand pit/sink hole.......Forgot my lunch at the truck though....won't do that again anytime soon.   I hope to go back in a week or two. Smiley Smiley

Snake, cool to see someone from Manatee co. on here. If you buy a Garmin GPS I'll loan you the Map software it adds a LOT of detail, the forest roads and the larger trails are on it. Cost me $100 but you can borrow it for free.

Thanks, will it work with any of the Garmin's that accept maps? I was looking at the etrex legend, any thoughts on that one?

heres map quest up to Altoona the town just before Scrub on hwy 19

http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.adp?go=1&do=nw&un=m&cl=EN&ct=NA&rsres=1&1y=US&1a=&1c=key+largo&1s=fl&1z=&1ah=&2y=US&2a=&2c=altoona&2s=fl&2z=&2ah=

heres another of hwy 19 near Altoona http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&address=&city=altoona&state=fl&zipcode=

once you get on hwy 19 and go past Altoona heading north you will see the "Welcome to the Ocala National Forest" sign. Travel another few minutes more and on your right hand side you will see a blue sign that says rd 445. Pass this sign and get ready to turn left within like 1 mile or less onto forest rd 573 which enters hwy19 which you'll be on at an angle so look for it. 573 isn't marked well so you might pass it your first time but its easy to know if you've gone to far because you will go under some of those tall-high powered powerlines that lead to Scrub and if you do just turn around. 573 starts off as pavement and then turns into a dirt road after a few hundred yards. Just stay on the dirt road for 7 miles and you will come to the campground on your right at the interestion of forest roads 573 and 588. You can't really miss the campground. I usually park under the powerlines just otside the campground with some other riders. Hope this info helps. If you get lost let me know so I dont give these directions out to anyone else..lol..kidding

That's the one I have also. It works well. It doesn't show much if you don't have the extra software downloaded. Wish I did!

I have the roads and recreation CD. It has the whole United States on it. The E-trex holds 8mb. That will get you about 75% of Fl. on it. It is very detailed, every pond, lake, creek, road, etc and all the water nav markers. It tells you what is at the interstate exits: resturants, gas stations, grocery stores, etc. It uses the old exit numbers though.
