I am going to the hatifeld mccoy trails and I want to stay in the town with the most stores. I have seen a picture of a 7 11 that you can ride to. Thats where I want to stay. Whats the name of this town.

I'm going up around 6/15 - 6/20 to Man.  Most of the towns near the trailheads will let you ride on the streets as long as you obey the traffic laws.  The cities of Man and Gilbert have quite a few places to stay and eat.  You ride to wherever you like (trailhead, eats, gas etc.)  Go to trailsheaven.com hit lodging most & of them explain the riding situation.  Browning Fork/Rockhouse trailhead is near both Man and Gilbert.  The people are real friendly and accomodating.  Hope you have a room lined up because they are getting scarce. Dirt days begins somewhere around 6/21 and it will be madness around there during that week.

The town where 7-11 is,  is called the town of Mann. Mann has several places to stay. On the other side of the Mountain trail  system is call Gilbert. There is also place to stay

They have a forum on the trailsheaven.com site. Perhaps your questions can be answered better on there. I to wanted to go to, however from what I have heard it is more for Ute's.

You can ride dirt bikes or quads. Sport quads do fine on most of the trails. My nephews ride sport quads and they kicked a$$ up there.

I got a crf230 dirt bike. Is that good enough?

I also have a CRF230F. The bike would be fine on most of the green trails. I wouldn't try the blues or the blacks on ANY 2 wheeler although I did see a couple of bikes on some of the harder trails. All depends on your skill level. The last I heard though, the town of Man is not dirt bike friendly and you can't ride them on the street to get to the trail head. That may have changed though. Check out the Hatfield McCoy Forum over at ATVTime.com. Lots of locals there. Also, for your Mom, there is a nice mall in Charleston. That's about it. Does she like antiques?

This is the town of Man West Virginia and Gilbert West Virginia.  
Dirt bikes are not allowed on the roads unless they are license and register. They need to be trailer to the entrance of the trail head. Every body in these small town are super nice peoples.

I've seen some things on the H-M message boards regarding permits, and kids under 16 riding larger cc ATV's. I know all unlicensed riders need to have an adult with them.  Some say the rangers won't bother you.  Some say you won't get a permit because of liability.  I think signing a waiver would be okay.  Another said get that Social Security issue fixed (whatever that means) Maybe use a bogus one?  I would hate to drive all the way up there and have unhappy 14 year-old sitting and watching.  He rides a Z400 and does well on it. Seems  Any real info (not guesses) would be appreciated.  Maybe the person we are renting from would know.

I went with my nephews who were 14 and 15 years old at the time. One rode a Z400 and the other a Raptor. We had no problems. We were told that as long as the kid fits the quad you wont have a problem. That was a couple years ago. Things may have changed.

You should have NO problem getting a permit.  I am a vendor for the HM Trails and I sell permits.  The child should fit the machine.  I do not know of anyone who has been turned down because the child was not the "appropriate" age.

Thanks for the info everyone...he shouldn't have a problem, He's not tall for his age, but he fits on the Z-400 and is a good rider.  Can't wait to get there and ride.  

We alraedy have a place to stay, but might catch you for the permits at the Browning.

Here are the  rules
Remenber only one person per bike


Obey all user rules (see the handbook)

All trail users must have a valid Hatfield-McCoy Permit.

Everyone must wear a DOT, SNELL or other approved helmet and protective eyegear.

No passengers on any ATV unless the ATV is manufactured for the driver and one passenger.

No vehicle over fifty (50) inches in width is allowed on any trail.

No alcoholic beverages may be consumed or carried.

Obey all signs, gates, and barriers.

Stay on marked trails.

Only enter and exit the trail systems at a trailhead or town connector.

Do not enter a no trail, no entry or gated area.

Drive or ride at a speed reasonable for conditions.

No person shall drive an ATV unless that person meets the minimum age recommendation specified by the ATV manufacturer for the ATV that is being driven.

Motorcycles and ATVs must have a properly functioning muffler and USFS approved spark arrestor.

Stop when signaled by a ranger.

Carry photo identification at all times.

we stay every year with the trail house owner..(hi lisa) if you have any questions, or need a really great place to stay. about a two min. ride from to trail. get with her and see can get them all answered for you...
and yes it can be done on sport quads. some trails you need to use your best judgement on.but you will have one of the best times of your life..
