Cops hate quads-big and small!!
«
on:
January 07, 2007, 11:47:09 PM »
I'm buying a D.R.R. 50 quad from Greenmachine and he drove from Brandon to Gandy Bch. to let my little girl try it.
A cop in a Ford F-150 ext. cab with Sheriff on the side, pulled up and told us we couldn't ride our quads there. As he pulls away, a guy on a dirtbike- with no helmet on- comes by and he stops him.
After five minutes , the guy rides on.When he comes back, he asked if we were gonna ride our quads. After I told him what the Sheriff said, he told us the cop said he was kewl, as long as he didn't do any donuts, or haul azz.
Well,I'm talking to the major tommorrow and tell him about it.We wear all gear , and we ride registered quads. There's no way that slides!!

Since when is it "LEGAL" to ride at Gandy Beach?
I wouldn't imagine a beach was considered a legal riding area anyway.

Ya see ATV complaints are mess up a cops routine. Those calls rob him of time he could be using to do more important task. You know, poking his buddies wife, picking up illegal meds, sleeping behind the substation.....

From your previous posts you obvisoulsy know that riding is not allowed out there.

No offense but who cares about that. Hes trying to say how the cop told him to leave but the dirtbiker he said could stay. Not if its legal or illegal. If you were just going to test something out you have told him and you wouldnt be there long, couldve avoided this whole thing?

The point is he is aware of the guy in the F150 as he has posted that before he knows to watch out for him. Why did he know to watch out for him - maybe a previous warning was given to him not to ride there? Who knows.
As far as the dirt bike that was there - maybe he was given a warning, maybe he was told to leave. None of us will know that - "he said she said". The point I was making is that its not a legal riding area - folks are bashing the cops when the cop is not in the wrong. Wether one was told they could stay or not, the one posting on here was aware there was an F150 that he needed to wach out for. Why do you have to watch out for the truck if its ok to be there?
I see the point you are making that he was only going to be there for a few minutes to let his daughter "test" ride a quad.
See it how you want to see it as no offence was taken to me.

the last time i was there a deputy(not in an f-150)stopped us and told us he researched the situation because there are quite a few people who ride there on quads and dirt bikes.and he said he was told that the dirt frontage road is state owned highway right of way and informed us it was against the law to ride there.and politely asked us not to ride there anymore.he was pretty cool about it.he told us he could ticket us but he warned us and told us if he sees us back there riding he will have no choice but to ticket us.

Ok, I cant let Chino get rr'ed here. i met Chino on the beach p[arking area on west side of Gandy @10:30AM Saturday. It was empty, there was probably 5 total cars on the beach & one van full of collegiate rowers. We were not near anyone, heck the hot dog vendors werent even there yet!!! He was parked before I arrived, i pulled up in my truck/trailer. My 8yr old son unloaded the little 50cc quad, it looks mean as hell, but nothing compared to a CR250. Before Chino's daughter could even throw her leg over it, a cop comes pulling up to us almost immediately & says, "no riding out here". I explained that I drove 20 miles to meet him to attempt to sell my sons quad & his little girl just wanted to do a turn around the truck & see if it is something she wouls like. He firmly told me again, "if i see ANYONE riding out here I am instructed to stroke them a ticket & this is your warning" I very politely again explained that we were NOT here to ride or cut up, just a conveneint location to meet for a possible sale of a quad for a KID. I asked if we could have 5 minutes & his response was "dont be here when I get back" & he started to drive off.
As soonas he started to drive off a 40something guy comes hauling ass on a CR250 & the cop calls him over to the truck. They chatted fro about 10 minutes & then the cop leaves. The guy on the CR250 pulls up to us immediately & asks if we are "gonna unload those things & ride or what?"
We said heck no, the cop just told us to load up & leave or we would get ticketed!!!!
The CR250 rider said he was asked to "take it easy & no wheelies or donuts" and the cop told him it was ok for him to ride.
Now I dont know where anyone else is from, but from my neck of the woods that is just wrong.
Last time I checked a CR250 & a 50cc mini quad were both considered OHV's.
My last question is the dirt road law, the parking area is a dirt road so why cant an OHV just ride slowly back & forth, wouldnt be fun.

Come on ya'll were in the wrong not the cop, cheese and rice.

For the sake of doubters, the guy on the CR stayed longer than we did & never stopped buzzing back & forth, then 2 more yz cycles showed up as well. We left. I never said one bad thing about the cop except he was 2faced & blount about it. Maybe when some people post on here they have reason to lie, but I am 36yo with 2 kids, I DONT LIE! Gtnwood, dont ASS sume you know anything about me & I wont ASS sume you are illiterate & cant spell assume correctly.
It is what it was. No harm done to me, I dont ever need or want to ride there. It was obvious that we werent there to ride. Chino is still gonna buy the quad & I am still gonna ride with him sometime, so all in all it was a good day. The cop never came back & I do beleive he gave us the time like he said he would, he just likes to instill a little fear to get respect just like all cops, it is their job.

Not a doubter, just dont believe everything I read and only half of what I see. By the way this thread is Cops hate quads big and small is that not also an assumption? It probably is, because I ride quads with several cops who are just as perplexed and disappointed with the lack of riding areas as the rest of us. Maybe, just maybe they are in actuallity trying to keep all the areas for themselves, because you know how those cops are

I stated earlier that I don't think all cops are bad.But after the officer pulled away, the dirtbike rider kept on riding. Two other bikes pulled in and the officer made a U-turn and drove back by and said nothing to the other two bikers.
If you weren't there, then don't try to tell me what I saw.I didn't need the words of one biker. There's a difference of enforcing the law, and just being a thingy to certain people.
Everytime I've been out there, I see dirtbikes and no quads. As soon as someone arrives with a quad, the same officer shows up.And I said,"To look out for this officer-Loven It-is because I've been out there on my quad, and a few other Sheriff's and State Troopers have pulled in and did nothing. This guy is the only one who runs me out of there...you do the Math!!
I know it's not a legal riding area, but it also doesn't say it isn't.If you run me off, kewl. But don't tell me I can't ride there and someone else can.
Hell, I'll post for every dirtbiker to go out there, at least you'll have a place to ride!!

yeah if he told you to leave he should have told the dirtbikes to leave to.the first time we were there an older deputy pulled up and jokingly asked my son if he could ride his banshee my son said sure but the deputy said he couldn't while he was on duty.he also said his son rides his dirt bike out there.maybe the dirtbike you saw was this deputies son!.but he was the only cool cop we ran into out there.I will never go there to putt around again.

Something does'nt smell right, are you positive this guy is a real cop. It just does'nt sound like something a cop would say or do. It would be stupid for him to discriminate as to who is and is'nt allowed to break the law, because it would be too easy for someone such as yourself to make a complaint to his agency/supervisor and therefore cause himself grief. Even if he is a Richard Head cop now, he wont be any kind of cop for long if he treats the public that way.

Legal or Illegal, I ride everywhere. I find no problem in riding on vacant, unused land and having fun if I'm not annoying or hurting anyone. I know better now not to ride on wetland or anythign like that where actual animals live. you may say that mudholes are prestine wildlife sancutaryies, but what the hell lives in a gas and oil covered hole that 100 trucks run through everyday?
If I want to have fun, I will have fun. If a Sherrif or Police Officer comes, I will always stop and explain the situation. Most of the time they are pretty damn cool about it and simply ask us to leave. They respect us if we respect them most of the time.

Seriously to tell me to do the math is crazy. Legal riding vs non legal riding.
Kid or adult the rule is the same.
When someone states they know it is not a legal riding area, then does a post to say cops hate quads big and small just irritates me. Cops don't like any rider who has been told before espically by the same cop not to ride somewhere!
The point I am making is Scratchup has obvisouly been told not to be there before - correct me if I am wrong. I am not talking about the dirt bike guys espically since no one will ever know what the cop told him. He could have very well told them to be gone before he got back too. Maybe someone called before and complained about the quad being there and not the dirt bike. Who knows. Either way you have been told before not to be there. The cop seemed pretty fair to not ticket you or take the bike. But you are right the cop was in the wrong
....seriuosly.
