I am considering a Honda 450r as an upgrade from my 400ex and giving the 400 to my son. What are the good and the bad so far on the 450r so I can make an informed decision. I was leaning toward the electric start 06'.
Other than Dreth who Jumps over things to high for the bikes ability to w/ stand on the landing and the frame breaking all over the place what are some other Pros and cons of the Quad. Thanks a Bunch

overall i love my 450r, i upgraded to it a lil over a year ago from a 400ex and i wouldnt go back for anything, i got the 05 with kickstart because i didnt want the hassle of a battery and my bike not starting because of it.  i think its more reliable than electric start, but thats probly because i just have bad luck when it comes to electric start and batteries. ive rode alot of other bikes and i think the 450r the most universal bike, the yfz and ltr are more for the track than trails and other type of riding, but thats just my opinion

The 06 has a lot more power than the 04 and 05. The only problem I've read about it some of them are hard starting. I think the fix is the clearance of the decompression vavle. I wouldn't let any of these little things shy you away. All quads have some problems, no matter what brand it is. If you get a 450R or a YFZ you will be amazed over your 400EX. Here are some links for good information on 450Rs.

Awesome bike universally!  06 does have more power and the electric start is nice!  But if you leave it relatively stock, then its easy to kick start the 05 and earlier models!  As far as a race quad.  I think that it easier to get to respond to small mods and a better handling quad on the track!  And, its a Honda!  Hope some of that helps! If you get a kick start get it in the 06 model. The 06 does have more horsepower. The only problem I've had when starting mine (electric) is when someone gives it gas while trying to start it. I don't quite understand why Honda does that. You'll be able to tell a huge difference once you get on any of the 450's! I know I love mine!

I agree! My 06' is very difficult to start once it has stalled! But my 05' starts easier when stalled w/ the kicker!

On the 06 if you go with the crf dirtbike carb you dont have the starting problems b/c you have a hotstart.

Do a little research. The 06 has starting issues.

Here is just a few.

All of the 450's are great bikes, fast & torquey motors and they just keep pulling but if you are a bigger guy stay away from the 450's. Me personally am 6" 3" and 260, so they feel to small . The only thing I don't understand is why Honda took off the oil cooler for 06'? But anyways it is a good bike, and even though I am saying this as a neutral party I honestly dislike the Honda 450r the most, it just does'nt feel right to me..... everyone I know that has one loves it though...

They took the oil cooler off because the 06 has a larger radiator so it isn't needed.

my 05 450r is awesome kick start is easy  05 has 10:5 to 1 with bigger carb 42 mm  06 is 12: to 1 with a 40 mm i think my 05 is faster but they raised the stem 1" for more comfort
