XC racing- how to FYI

This topic is for those of you that have wanted to try some racing but dont know how to get started. I met some people through a new club "Sarasota Area Quad Riders" that are very involved in FTR racing and they walked me through my first race and answered all my questions.
 There is a class for every skill level and every type of bike. You must have a tether kill switch and riding gear. The races are usually 6 to 8 mile laps through the woods and you will make 3 to 6 laps depending on your speed and the type of terrain. You dont have to have a lot of $$$ in suspension and you dont even want your quad any wider than stock. So the same bike that you go trail riding on you bring and race.
 Your first race is a little expensive because you must join
  FTR $40
  AMA $40
  buy a transponder $20
  entry fee $40
 
 After your first race you only pay the entry fee, the memberships are yearly and the transponder is yours to keep and reuse every race.
  There are 2 races left this season Quad Scramble May 6th and 7th near Arcadia and a Hare Scramble May 27th near Daytona. I will be at both and would be happy to help get someone started.

the Central Florida Quad Riders that we joined is also involved with FTR, Josh and I are the only members that don't race, lol. We have been thinking about getting into the Ute series. They sound like fun.

You should give it a try. The start is the part that makes you nervous, after that you settle into your own pace and just ride. Slower riders will move out of your way and faster riders will expect you to move over for them.

Hey Chillin that is great of you to offer to help out us first timers! Both my kids, and I, want to give it a try on May 6th and 7th.
Glad to know that we can come to you for help and advice.
On the topic of advice ----where are you guys getting your colored number plates from, and do you get a number at the race, or do you have to get it in advance?

Number at the race. You can buy the backgrounds at a cycle shop. You look on the flyer and see what color you have to be, you buy two number plates with correct color for your class (make sure you get it right because a 3 pack is 15 bucks) and then go to the races and pick your number if its not already taken, then go to one of the venders to get numbers..Incase they dont have venders there.. I would bring 3 numbers. That way you can make any number combination with it incase someone has already had it.

Also, a reminder. ALL FTR memberships expire june 7th.

Hey Chillin, this is Chino ( 1Faster Blaster ) I sold my Blaster and got a Z400 from my friend ChrisWitcher who was racing FTR's. The quad is race ready. I think I might try the FTR races soon. I'll be seeing ya at the meeting Wednesday!

Chino, if your bike is a 03, I HIGHLY suggest you get a gusset kit for your bike. The riding is harsh on our bikes and your bike has the weaker frame. Just a suggestion. And a helpful hint.

Actually, Dreth I have seen some wide bikes. There was a new Suzuki 450 and a handfull of DS 650s at the last race. I dont know how they did but it must have been tight in a few spots. There has been no mud at any of the races I've been at yet but it hasn't rained in a LONG time.

well chillen i will be on vacation on those dates so maybe next year i will get me some 4/1 offset rims and take out a few spacers and give it a try   im not fast but i do have the stamina of the energizer bunny

Quads race on Sat. at the Harescrambles,  at the Quadscrambles they have the kids classes, beginner, and utility on Sat. and the rest of the classes on Sun.
  Next year the Quad Scrambles will be a one day format. This will be better for me  because my son will race next year and then we can race on the same day and come home.

Only mud race we had this year was at gatorback on the motorcross part.

Hey Yall,

I am a part of the club and we have been working on the Sadra Quadscramble course for a month or so. We just finished it up this past weekend. There is no mud, unless we get alot of rain before the weekend, and it is pretty wide open. There are some tight sections but almost any quad should have no problem getting through the course. My stock YFZ and my TRX330r with +2 a-arms both ripped full throttle through the track with no problems. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Quadscrambles, along with the usual race quad classes, there are kid classes, utility class, 2-strokes, under 400cc's, etc. You do not need a built to the hilt YFZ or 450r to be competitive. There are classes for almost everyone. On Saturday, after the races, there is supposed to be a "fun run." Those of you who want to see what XC racing is can cruise the track at your own leisure and see what to expect. Bring your helmet. There is a charge to ride and race, and there is, if I am not mistaken, a $10 weekend gate fee per vehicle, not per person. Check the flier on the FTR site. I believe the FTR memberships are good through the end of next season if you join or rejoin now. Hopefully some of you can find the time to come and check it out.

 I thought there would be more interest in this. One of the cool things about this type of racing is all the different places that you get to ride that are only open for the races.

Being in clubs for the last few years and working on the tracks is a blast. Getting to ride on a couple of thousand unmolested acres with very few people around is like the ultimate. Seeing the wildlife and not worrying about me or anyone in my family getting run into by some fool takes the cake.

If you are thinking of joining or already a member, and you are an ATV'er you should join ATVA instead of AMA. It is the same company, but by joining ATVA you support ATV's instead of motorcycles. FTR and all other events requiring AMA membership view ATVA, as it is, the same as AMA membership.
In otherwords, ATVA is AMA's ATV division.
