with his neck in that position, i don't think a helmet would have helped much, except he'd have a broken neck with a helmet on.
but it's still a really good idea to always were one regardless.

I don't think thats a dummy, yes the glasses would stay on his head, an accident like that could happen at 10mph if not slower. I think a helmet would have helped because it would have allowed his head to slide on the asphalt instead of folding under the body.

agreed, he might have had a stiff neck for a few days and possibly some road rash,,,but probably still alive.

That's fake. :\ But you should always wear a helmet when riding. Only time I don't wear a helmet is when I'm doing yard work... which means rarely. lol

Very tragic ,
We see images like these every so often and no really thinks that such a tragic accident can happen to them because it's always somebody else.
This poor guy woke up that morning probably like any other morning and his life took a tragic turn . A helmet might've helped in some way , no way of knowing .
Some of us who have been around in the hey days of atc's , your 90', 110's and 185's might recall a time or two when fipped a bike and it landed on us. Most of the times we simply kicked the bike off of us.
Most today's ute 4 wheelers are over 600lbs with some models pushing 700lbs and when one flips over and pins you will have a hard time gettin it off you.
Like some one stated , a tragic accident can happen at any speed even when going slow, is so true . One close call i had while riding thru a deep buggy trail was when my right side hit a hidden stump and flipped my quad in almost 3 ft of water . No big deal right ? Well my foot slipped of the foot peg and in no time i was under the bike trying to get it off me in a hurry .
If that had happened to a older or weaker person it could have been fatal.
Helmets should be worn IMO but are useless if we are not careful when ridin.

I agree with foreman1. I had a minor accident at Croom when I hit a bump going fast and the quad pinned me to the ground. No big deal, I got up and pushed the quad off me, but if i had been riding, say, a Grizzly 660 or some other Ute, I would have been in serious trouble, even though I was wearing full gear.
By the way Thrumud, I belive the photo's real but i almost barfed when I saw his head in that position. What if some little kid started going around the site after their mom/dad got up and saw that? No offense, but I think the photos should be removed.

Kids should see it in my small humble opininion. It leaves a lasting impression on the danger involved when riding w/ or w/ out safety gear.
Small kids do not need to see the sexualy suggestive sigs and comments made tied to the pictures that are posted in here. My son views this site w/ me regularly and sometimes its he ask questions and believe me when I tell you they are not always easy to answer.
Anyway as for the picture, I'd hate to have to go that way. Safety 1st
I see guys riding street bikes everyday around here w/ their helmet strapped to the side of their bike and riding w/ no helmet. I pray that I am never involved in the acident that these guys are headed for. Its kinda selfish seeing how they will be dead of almost dead while we have to be there to try and help them out till the ambulance arrives.

I personally am going to show this post to my daughter tomorrow and tell her that they guy might be OK if he had a helmet.
she is very good about wearing a helmet anyway, but help is always appreciated.
heck, I have my ute parked on the back porch right now and she asked if she could get on it(not running, and not riding, just get on and sit), I told her OK and she ran away to her room and grabbed her helmet ;-)
gotta love kids.

that would scare the crap out of most kids, even I have trouble looking at it, but tragic things like these usually convince kids to wear helmets, or whatever the situation calls for, like in my driver's ed class, we would see vids, and videos WAY more graphic then that pic above, lemme tell ya im in no hurry to get a car after seeing that stuff.........

I removed the images because some members find them disturbing for minors and I can understand that. I will not post the link to the images because the site where I got them from has extremely graphic images. Sorry, just please ride safe and wear protective gear.

Thrumud,
Thanks for posting that. It is a terrible picture but as Ida said. I showed my kids so that they know what can happen. Everybody is not going to agree on everything but I had no problem with the pic.

I had the worst wreck of my ATV career last week Monday. I was riding around in my pasture and went down into a canal. As I started up the other side, the bike began to spin a bit. Not a big deal, I've been up this canal bank numerous times and it usually spins. I pulled the diff. lock (2006 Brute Force 750) and the front kicked sideways a little. Much to my surprise, the bike began to tip.
Now, This isn't a big deal. I've been riding all my life. I've climbed hills that with the exception of Chillen, Yamahondaman, Corn and a few others who ride at a certain secret spot, nobody on this board would attempt. So, a little tip wasn't a problem right? Wrong.
What happened next is a blur. However, I do recall that the bike went beyond balance real quick, despite the fact I was moving less than 5mph at the time. So, instinctively I dove off the back side of the bike and into the canal which was dry. I dove out horizontal, landing on my right side. Again, not a big deal, I am a real muscular guy that's played football and knows how to take a fall. I fully expected to just hit the ground, roll up and tip my bike over off of it's side. (The canal bank was maybe 5 foot tall so the bike only topped on it's side).
Boy was I wrong. When I hit the ground, I landed on a nice hard log that hit be right across my chest on the right side. The result? I've ripped apart all of the cartilage that connects the top of my rib cage to my sternum. Oh, did I mention how much it hurts? I've broken bones, ribs, detached muscles, etc. None of it hurts like this. Doctor says 10-12 weeks for full recovery. I am supposed to compete in a strongman event in late June. Guess what? I will not be able to train for at least anohter 4 weeks.
The moral of the story is that you can never be too careful. I was going slow, in an area that I'd ridden all my life. I truely could not believe it when I hit that log and felt my chest tear. So, be careful. Be vigilant. Be safe.
