I had a idea. I cant afford a ATV for a while, and I am going to need some kind of transportation too and from work/school pretty soon. So why not go finance myself a Dual purpose bike, trails on the weekends roads mon-fri.... But what one is best? Im not good at riding dirt bikes might i add..... but street bikes i can handle anything..... so what one would you guys recomend?

A cheap truck, what if it rains. then find a cheap quad later. There is a kawasaki bayou 220 in the for sale section for $900

A rain suit works great. Good Ideal cheap transportation. The kind of bike depends on what size. I think dual sport bikes are from 350 CC - 650 CC.

A cheap truck, what if it rains. then find a cheap quad later. There is a kawasaki bayou 220 in the for sale section for $900

suzuki also makes a 400, which is probably better than the klx. Other than those two, the only other one is KTM.

If you plan on doing any serious off-roading or any jumping I wouldn't go with the klx/rmz400s or them dual purpose yamys either they are all kind of heavy and aren't that great for hard trails. If you plan on going slow or riding fire roads they are just fine. I'd go with the new Husky 510 dual sport, it is a dirtbike with a licence plate basically. Or other options are doing the conversion yourself but that is a long road to travel. Not to mention the new racing four-strokes don't meet emmissions anyways so that leaves you with trailbikes. Plus FL sucks so you'd be best just going to another state to register. To be real honest with you the dual-sport options right now aren't top-notch I'd stick with the cheap truck save till you can buy somethin nice senerio.

the problem i see is your gonna be using your everyday vehicle for off roading. what happens when you hit a tree or miss a jump  and the bike breaks. how ya gonna get to work. Huh

NO JUMPING!!!! I have enough trouble ballancing hahaa. I just plan on cruising into a few trails here and there. Maybe a few mud pits for fun ETC. Im not going to be treating it like a race bike.. I like th Honda 650 but I seen a 2005 Sportster Xl custom 1200 today for only6500!!!! So now i might just stick to a good ole harley and then buy a cheap yz125

Numkut - you're a sissy..... What do you mean you can't go fast or ride the trails on a dual sport bike, because they are heavy.... Who says dude... Have you ridden one, or are you afraid of the sand... Or is it that rubber side down will be rubber side up most of the time.. They ride the hard trails just fine, I have no problem....

If the mso for the bike reads not for highway use, you won't get a plate for it. They use to do it in Vermont, but from what I understand they have stopped that. I don't know of any other state that does that.

If you want to go for the big bucks go for a KTM, dual purpose, street legal.

I think im going to go test ride a Sportster to see how i like it. If i dont like it ill get a dual purpose and be done

Riding on the road is a challange along with riding in the dirt. I have both bikes, a honda xr250l for both short commutes and fun off road. It is a challange to ride in the deep sand, but I thrieve on that.

Riding on the road is a total different concept. I ride a yahama on the road, srx250, cafe racer or what they call sport bike. It is a trip... Suggestions for you if your serious about this, ride with a bright color on such as a yellow jacket so the motorist can see you, they are not trained to look for a bike, and they will pull out in front of you, and it becomes a danerous situation. I have been there and don't plan on going back.
