Lake City girl, 13, injured in ATV crash
 January 23. 2006 6:01AM

A 13-year-old Lake City girl was in serious condition Sunday night after she crashed an all-terrain vehicle in Columbia County near Brown Road.

The incident comes just two days after a 12-year-old boy drove his ATV into the path of a van in Levy County.

Florida Highway Patrol said the teen involved in the Columbia County crash, Brandi Spranger, was in a drainage pond near Ethlind Court and Billy Place at about 2:25 p.m. when the vehicle began to overturn.

Spranger's passenger, 12-year-old Melissa Jacobson, jumped to safety, but the 13-year-old driver ended up underneath the ATV after it overturned.

Spranger was taken to Shands at the University of Florida.

In the Levy County incident, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Matthew Schrader of Chiefland failed to yield the right of way to a van at an intersection on state Road 345.

Schrader was thrown from the vehicle and taken to Shands at UF with serious injuries.

Troopers cited the boy for failure to yield at an intersection and improper operation of an ATV on a roadway.

According to Florida law, in most cases, ATVs can only be operated on private property and not on public roads, streets or highways.

I guess dumb parents didn't watch their kid
and If i had a 13 year old sister right of ways
outside lake city i went with her in case soming happens.

I guess it's parents  fault and not teching how dangerous atvs can be
and how ride right.
But next time i guess she be very careful on atv
and soming will come good out of it they will learn their mistakes
and next time they will be smarter next time to ride.

Thanks,
amhighlander  Cool

The boy from Chiefland had to have one of his legs amputated. I don't know how he is doing other then that.

I'll put up with my bad knee any day.

That's to bad the price he had to pay to learn his lesson in life. We all make decisions we have to live with for ever, lets hope he recovers completely and tries to teach younger ones his errors.

Kind of hard to blame an ATV for anyones injury unless the ATV was faulty.

I had a friend when I was younger (IT WAS YEARS AGO....) and I recall he fell out of a tree and sprained his knee (may have been his shoulder...IT WAS YEARS AGO).
1st thing he said when he hit the ground (may have been the third thing?).......he said the tree was TOO HIGH.   YUP...blame the tree
for you falling out...

as the story not so matter of factly states....once again... ATV'rs are not clevor enough to operate them  or supervise others that ride
(underlying fact that they should be banned).

  1. ATVs are not toys.
  2. ATVs that go over 15 MPH should not be driven by a child under 16.
  3. I know people break rules...and that is cool...........
but at least throw your kid through a windshield of your truck and say you swerved to miss a dog or something.................(hide the wrecked quad before the ambulance gets there).

I know where turner rd is at.I heard my dad told me about it it's a small
mini sub divisons neigborhood it use to be woods i heard some people told me while back when i was getting tear down work shed couple months and
one of neigbors said they are buying out chunks of land from
other land companyies over and selling them.

I can understand if was 16year riding a big quad machine.
It depends how people can ride better and have  good repect
each other on right of ways.
