I believe the 6 killed were hunters. Wonder if they had their guns.

Hey i am going to salt springs this weekend? is that close?
The last time we rode up there we came across two dudes with large sticks, that looked like a  young and old ZZ top band members, freaked us out. This was in the late afternoon too, strange characters, looks like we have to pack some protection in the atv took kit.
Where you going, ? Staying at Elite in salt springs herel

If I didn't want the info..I could find it! LOL

    All I know is:
handguns are illegal in a national forest without a 'rangers' permit (except on a highway as you pass through. Highway 40 in Ocala
for instance).
Open carry of a hand gun (western style slung-off-your hip) is illegal in Florida.
Florida statute for concealed carry is 790.06.

the area they are talking about on the news is the Juniper Wilderness, they say at least 2 miles from any road,,,but if they go about a mile from that area to the West,,,your gonna hit a clay road.

oh well, can't expect city-slicker news people to know about that.

Id@

ida,

were they on a hiking trail? there is a foot trail that goes to pats island (the place the book "the yearling" was written about) in that area. they closed down all the roads years ago. i always wanted to ride an atv in there (the wilderness area) back in my trespassing days. i dont do those kind of things anymore.

Well we can all goto the forest and not worry. The worst part?? The killer was not even 20 years old yet and has told his friends before that he wanted to be a serial killer.

It is not against the law to carrry in the Natl. forest so long as it is within the times of hunting season that allows use of firearms and you posses a hunting liscense and WMA stamp. Your CWP does not allow any special rights and thus technically speaking you can not carry concealed within the boundries of the forest. I carry on my hip in the wide open for anyone to see and have stopped and talked to Ranger's, LEO etc. and never had a problem although most of the time I was hunting not riding.

This may have been done by the women's stalker. And, carrying a weapon is a good idea, but, Billy Bob ain't going to approach you with his gun drawn now is he? And, what if he pciks you off from afar? Unfortunately, the encroachment of "civilization" may have caught up with ONF, so I guess camping in a group is the only way to go there.

yeah, my friend and i camped there once but next time i go i'm going to bring alot more people or be armed.

Well, I would still be careful. ONF is a big place with many "different" users. Meth labs, poachers, drunks, drug dealers, rainbows... ANYthing is possible. Be prepared for the worst, but expect the best.

Yes he did this time but calling it before you find out is racist in itself.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened at ONF.  Back in the 90's a brother and sister were reuniting/camping during a college break when they were kidnapped and tied up.  The brother was beaten to death and the sister was repeatedly raped over several days and left to die.  She managed to escape eventually.  I personally knew those victims and their dad was one of my middle school teacher in the early 80's.
