Raptor Squealing Rear Brake
«
on:
October 11, 2010, 07:39:01 PM »
Any suggestions? Slamming on rear brake to stop in emergencies : obviously necessary. Brake in its condition : unusable in such a situation. It squeals bloody murder and sometimes stops my engine. Brake pads, or rotors? Easy fixes?
Thanks guys
Andrew

Not sure about the stopping the motor part, but put it on a stand and spin the rear axle and look/listen to the rear brake, if it is squealing off and on then you know it is the rotor.

It sounds more like a rider problem than a brake problem. If you slam on the brakes without pulling in the clutch you will stall the motor every time, thats normal. Your motor shutting off in 6th. gear, not normal.

The caliper could be sticking or not sliding properly. The brake line could have trash in it. Lift the rear of the quad and loosen the bleeder. Do the brakes release? If yes then there is a restriction in the system. If they do not then it is most likely a caliper

Bailey: Good point. It was a used bike and Idk how many times the brake break was used.
Johnny: It is a 350 special edition 6 speed.
yfz: this whole thing sounds like i need to have it serviced. :/
chillin: i hold the clutch in whenever i stop suddenly, i think its the fact that the brake is so tough that it stops the rear end or something.
I guess I need to take it to Barney's, but at 40 bucks for 30 minutes of labor, not having any money, and having a few brake issues to be addressed, i cant afford it at this time.
thanks for all the advice guys.

It sounds like your caliper is froze up. Take your rear caliper off, use a heavy duty clamp and force the piston back a little. Make sure to open the bleeder just a little while compressing the piston in. Then put it back on. Not a good fix but you will be able to ride. Just DON'T use your rear brake.

So under stopping, it squeaks? Pads. You're hearing metal to metal contact. Do not use them anymore if you plan on keeping that rotor, otherwise you will wear out the new ones faster when you eventually replace the pads.
Squeaks all the time? Frozen caliper.
