ST. JOHNS COUNTY
Youth in ATV accident dies 5 days after crash

A St. Johns County youth injured during the weekend in an all-terrain vehicle accident has died, authorities said Friday.

Nicholas Haynes, 17, was taken to Shands Jacksonville Sunday. He died about 1 p.m. Friday, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

Haynes was riding without a helmet at Shore Drive and Shamrock Road when he apparently overturned.

Deputies had seen Haynes and a 15-year-old companion earlier in the afternoon and told them the ATV was illegal for use on public roads and to take it home.

When deputies arrived at the accident scene, the four-wheeler was hidden in a wooded area about 200 yards away, according to a report.
