I just got back from Big Scrub about an hour ago. When you get there it has its own gated camp ground area. If you wait till around august to go they will have the 2 new buildings complete which will offer a new clean restroom area and the best thing yet is Showers. Now for the time of travel it is approx 4-1/2 hours from Miami to Lakeland and from here in Lakeland it takes just shy of 2 hours to get there. So I would say roughly 6 hours give or take. We rode out there Friday and all day today, we covered around 60 miles of trails in 2 days. Found some cool places out there this trip. I highly recomend you ask the Camp Host for the rules and be wise and listen to them. The wardens/ Florida Fish & wildlife a cracking down on thugs out there who think its ok to tare up the land and race up and down the #'rd roads. You will be fined $500 bucks for starters. Depending on the Warden and your attitude will determine whether or not you lose your bike or serve 60 days time in Jail. Over all its alot of Fun, you wont be disappointed.

Alson since your thread says ONF questions I am going to barrow it for a question of my own. To anybody who rides ONF and knows the turf, There is a pit i guess you could call it probably 1/2 way between Big Scrub and Hwy19 on the South side of the Powerlines maybe a few poles or so before you head over to the Blue Sink Swimming Hole. We rode down in there today because it used to be a popular spot and they have signs posted everywhere "Absolutely No MOtorized Vehicles" And a few other signs to deter riders. What on earth is wrong w/ the pit that they would kick us out of there? And today we were under the Powerlines west of Scrub jumping some of the piled up dirt and the warden pulled up to us and Nicely Warned us not to do that because obviously the fines and all the other stuff you get threatnd w/ but the ruling was that we are out there to ride the trails only and that riding in circles disturbes the LAY OF THE LAND. Dont get me wrong as I have respect for the NAture deal and Authorities but what kind of ruling is that, we were not digging donuts, all we were doing is riding in a big oval and jumping a small pile of dirt. P.S. My buddy and I which he actually saw it not me but Seen a huge bear out there Friday Late afternoon. We stopped where he entered the Woods off the trail and and saw huge paw prints. I am no animal scientist but I would venture to say he was atleast 400 #s easy

I see bears all the time in the forest. The rules just get more and more strict. They are anti-fun.

Although it's about 20 miles away, I like the Comfort Inn in Mount Dora. There are a couple of other motels though, one's a Jameson Inn. Turnpike north to Orlando, exit to 429 to 441 north to 19 north to Big Scrub. TheComfort Inn is on SW side where 441 crosses 19.

60 days in jail for riding your quad on the road, I don't believe it. Nor do believe they will take your bike. Yes they would give you a ticket and ream you a new one but jail time and loss of your bike I don't think so. I suppose if you hassled the officer anything could happen but if you respect them I think you will walk away with a ticket.

All the pitts are closed and I will confirm that for you seeing how I just got back from there 2 days ago. There is no mapquest map that will take you directly t the Big Scrub site. If you have a GPS you can log the North West Coordinancefrom the Where to ride topic and find it that way. Also on hwy 40 east of 19 is a hotel or 2 that would put you w/ in 15 minutes of Big Scrub.

When are they going to close that pit out in the western U.S. called The Grand Canyon? It's gotta be even more harmful to the environment than those ONF pits combined! LOL

On the clay pits:
#1 Forestry and EMS has had enough of dragging out and flying out drunks and wana-be X Game stars out the pits with broken bones. #2 Environmentalist do not want you to damage the sensitive land. The US government needs it for bomb practice and mining. #3 It's fun, so your not allowed to ride there.

I really like Mars' explanation, but, they're also protecting it so loggers can rape the public land, too. Otherwise, we'd soon have to wipe our butts with our bare hands.

oye cubanoso, big scrub is still a great place to ride. I would use the stock tires on your bike, lots of whoops. As for camping, i dont know your situation, but scrub camp grounds are not bad at all, and from what i hear, now have new bathrooms with showers. Even though they have some new rules, all in all its the best trails in Florida, and from Miami its exactly 5 hours. enjoy !!

No helmets were required when i went a few months ago. I am going this friday-Sat night so hopefully the showers are open. The best thing to do is use mapquest, i put in the latitude and longitude in and zero'd in on bigscrub. If you are on google earth, it is the northwest corner of NF-588 and SE 127th St Rd. Copy and paste this in your end location! "Google Earth - New Placemark" lat=29.0499624676, lon=-81.7550551363 Copy that and put it in there and it should work, you will see a small white square in the northwest corner when you zoom, that tiny thing is the Big Scrub!
