Article from the Star Banner

Trail troopers
I have been reading and hearing about the designated trail system in the Ocala National Forest and wondering why the negative press. I talked with several fellow bikers and realized the designated trail system is here to stay.

At the end of the trail I was riding, I came upon an accident; someone seemed to be hurt badly. I sat on the bike and watched the scene unfold. Within a short period of time, there were OHV Volunteers on the scene.

They worked with precision. It looked like they had practiced this scene 100 times and could do it in their sleep. The OHV Volunteers had stopped OHV traffic in both directions, and where possible routed the public around the accident scene; they had the emergency medical services enroute, and another OHV Volunteer waiting at the road for EMS to give them directions. If the volunteers were not there the accident might have been worse.

I don't agree with the designated trail system in the Ocala National Forest but I do respect the work the OHV Volunteers are doing. The credit for running the designated trail system is not the National Forest Service; it is the OHV Volunteers.

It is my understanding there are a handful of volunteers who educate, patrol and assist wherever and whomever they can. I am glad the volunteers are there.

Would you like to help?  The new trail system is beginning.  We need at least 18 volunteers  for each Saturday and Sunday mornings to man the trailheads when they are built.  If you are interested, send me a personal message.
