Well there are allot of options out there today. If your looking for a brand new quad then i would suggest the 2008 Polaris sportsman 500. The carbureted version is 6,000 even. The EFI version is 1k more and not really worth it in Florida where we lack mountains and sub zero weather in the winter. The sportsman has been around since 1996 i believe and my dad has an 2004 that he drowns every time we ride and so far its been pretty good. Only thing that goes wrong occasionally is stuff like CV joins and stuff. The expected when you ride mud and water. Anyway I would suggest picking up something a few years old. You can buy a good Honda rancher 350 or foreman for cheap today and have allot of money left over for mods like tires and stuff. Drawback there is the age old debate of Independent suspension vs solid rear axle. If you want IS then you should go with the Polaris or even a used Polaris. Thats what I would reccomend. Basically get a good used one and save some $$ for new parts like a lift and tires. If you plan on mud and water allot you will enjoy an older quad that has the right stuff for mud instead of a brand new quad thats stock.
