First, let me congratulate you on getting an education and having a passion about something you could do for a living.  However, let me also give you a slap of reality.  When you say getting a film editing job is based upon 'who you know,' did it ever occur to you that the people 'in the know' got there by doing good work?  Your expression of resentment reflects the 'give it to me now' mentality that is so pervasive in youth today.  If film editing is what you want to do, take any job in editing you can get, at what ever wage you can earn.  Think about it; you will be getting paid for doing something you love!  Eventually, if you have the talent and work ethic, you will be one of those guys who 'must have known someone.'  Even if you have to work two jobs or lots of extra hours to make ends meet, it's part of earning your way.  Nothing worth having in life comes easy.  Ask anybody who has 'made it' in life.  I promise they will give you the same lecture.
