Stock versus stock or both with the same mods the DS is faster. Which is better depends on what you are looking for. If you want a bigger more stable bike that handles whoops better than the DS is for you .If you want a bike that jumps better and handles better in  tight trails than the Raptor is for you. As far as wheelstands, definitely the Raptor. The DS is definitely not for a small person. This bike will shoot you where ever it wants to. With no reverse you have to have a little weight / strength to throw it around. Even then you will get a workout by days end.

Stock for stock the DS is faster. The DS has a MUCH better suspension (the Raptor has the old Banshee shocks). The DS has several mods that will greatly improve the performance eg. end cap $55, ported intake free if done yourself, jetting for both $5, Uni filter $25, and with these mods you will have a power advantage over most (unless they have considerably more money invested in mods.  Down side to the DS is that it's top heavy and sits tall. It takes some getting used to and requires some muscle and skill to make it handle well enough to keep up with shorter bikes in the corners. I have to disagree with cableguy though, I love to jump my DS and it handles great in the air. And the suspension is good enough to keep it together even during those bad jumps that will eventually happen to anyone. I also like th DS cause it's not very common here in Fl yet which makes it stand out.
As far as the Raptor my personal experience is limited. I know Yamaha makes a good product. I would assume that there are similar mods that can be made for around the same cash. The down side is the suspension, and it doesn't have as much power as the DS (stock for stock , or equal mods). But it sits a little lower so the center of gravity should be lower helping some in the corners.
They are priced about the same. I would suggest riding both if you have the chance before making a decision. Talk to the dealers and see who is willing to make you a better deal to get you business. Another consideration might be the Predator. The 05 Troy Lee edition comes with a great suspension with rezzies all the way around to start with, it sits low (great in corners) and I believe it has reverse this year.
Regardless of what you pick, good luck.

Not to refrain you from your choice but why in Gods name would you want a DS.
A buddy of mine has one and cant keep up with us in the trails.
Its to wide and tipsy, to top heavy.
Gonna spend that kinda cash why not a 450Y or 450R?

And that buddy of mine is an experienced rider too.
Just my .02.

You notice that 01_ds650,Cain73,bluesman,CS650 and myself all ride the same bike, not that were biased or anything were just informed.LOL. Seriously though,I think the DS650,the Raptor, and the Predator are as close to each other as could be. Not much difference either way, there all bad _ss bikes. It just comes down to what your looking for in a sport quad. They all have there pros and cons.
