1  General / Tech Corner / Re: need big help please on: June 02, 2008, 03:57:08 PM
thanx, i figured it out..turns out the volts during a start and high rpm were 14.4...right in range..well i decided to check them after a 30 minute ride..the voltage was 16...this is very bad..and my battery mis shaped again and i smelled it..so its my regulator..i'll pick it up 2moro
2  General / Tech Corner / need big help please on: June 01, 2008, 11:44:57 AM
i just got a 99 1100 custom..well, it's really a custom too..the guy did pipes, bars, paint, odds and end bolt on shiny stuff..i also noticed on the lower chrome case by the foot break had one time been taken off and had a gasket sealer gel on it..and actually i found a bolt for the case stuck in between the pipes and screwed it back in (scary i know) so here's my problem..i got the bike as a good price and needing some fixing..the guy described the problem as the battery drains too quick..so we got it and it had a new battery he put in it..but the battery was all mis-shapen..and we read online and we knew it was something to do with the charging system..so we saw all the writing about the reg/rect.,stator, battery, or ground wire..well we got a volt meter and i did a slow charge on the battery it had..the battery charged over night and i did a volt test and it read 13.4..which was higher than the normal 12.1-12.9 (so i guess it was a bad number?) and i hooked it up. It turned all the lights on and odo but one blinker wouldn't blink and the high beam was gone. so we hit the starter and it just buzzed like the battery wasn't strong enough..so i jumped it with my car and it started. I then checked the volts at an idle and high rpm and it was in range at 14.5. so this left me to think the reg/rect is ok (right?) and the stator? so then we rode it around some and we got a new battery for it..oem..so we put that in and it also read 13.4 but it started the bike and the blinker was working but dim..the high beam wasn't on but everything else seemed fine..so that was thursday..after that day of riding around some and starting it some etc.. friday came along..we rode some more and checked the volts and all was good (though still 13.4 cold) and it started fine etc..today came (saturday) and all is still good except i noticed that the blinker that wasn't good before is now very dim and the headlight is totally out.. i'd read an article saying that bulbs went out quick when there was a ground wire i think? so i will test the battery again soon off and on and see how it stays charged...based off of the info given (and i know it's easier to see then listen to this thread) does anyone have the idea that it could have just been a bad battery? or that he charged the new battery not knowing it might harm it? or would it not harm it? is it a ground wire probably? and if it's a ground wire how can i trace it and fix it? thanx in advance

fuse boxes but what would you consider a considerable number? my volt meter is digital and when i did that tes i believe it was a 3 or 4? or maybe .3 or .4

thanx 4 the info

i just got a new bike..not a quad, but a 1999 yamaha v star 1100 cruiser..i got it for a steal because the owner said it had a minor electrical problem.  He claims he's had the bike for some time and the battery died.  he put a new one in and it wont hold the charge when you ride it (like it died after he put it in while he was riding).  He claims he took it to a mechanic and he said something about a reg/rectifier so we expected that COULD be the problem.  the battery was in new condition but it buldged like crazy and look outta shape..we read some articles about this and it said our problem was either stator, battery, reg, or grounded wire.  So we charged the battery over night and checked it with a volt meter. it read 13.6 when it sould be between 12.2-12.9 so it checked out as being "bad".the battery just clicked when we tried to start it so it didn't have enough power to turn but all the lights worked and horn, except for one blinker. (maybe a bulb).so we jumped it again and checked the volts with it running and with it revved to 3k (as this one article said to do) and the volts read as they shoudl 14.2-14.9 which means the stator is good because it's giving power back to the battery..we then shut it off and checked the circuit by testing the volt meter to the pos/neg wires (no battery on it) and i guess it checked out that the regulator/rectifier was good..so we put in a factory OEM battery and it was the same as the one in their..so we figured it would be good..the bike started right up. and now the blinker was fine and all lights still worked good..we rode it around for about 30 mins and all seemed good...so now we are just waiting to see if the battery holds the charge, but we hooked it up to a trickle charge anyway..i guess after some time we will just keep checking the battery to see if it's buldging...and if not..i guess it was a bad battery? maybe the guy messed it up somehow? he wasn't the most "in-tune" guy i'd bought a bike from. so if theres any other suggestions anyone can throw, please do..thanx

ya i want the led kit so they can see me from the side (like at a stop sign/intersection) because the headlight can't be seen from the side well..and i have all armor so hopefully it'll be good
13  General / Open Discussion / Re: Is it just me? on: April 03, 2008, 04:59:21 PM
if anything you think that because it seems like all car companies are copying each other's styles on trucks, cars, suv's..everything
14  General / Open Discussion / Re: Is it just me? on: April 03, 2008, 04:58:19 PM

ya..the court thing i believe is around 355 and then the tags are i guess liek 100 or so..and then i spent like 75 for oil, plugs, and oil filter..and i am going to put new pads fr/rear for around 45 total and then maybe a kn filter..so around 2130 give or take..it has 15k miles and no problems mechanically or cosmetically
17  General / Open Discussion / Re: new to street bikes.. on: April 03, 2008, 12:38:12 AM
ya i feel more comfortable on the ricer because it's super nimble and will move nicely..i actually got tapped yesterday in my neighborhood by some old lady at an intersection..it was a 3 way stop and i stopped and began to go and this lady came flying down the road and never stopped and skid into my rear tire and tapped me lightly and she jumped out of her car to come yell at me or something and i punched it and i saw her again going like 60 down my street that's a 20 zone..i honestly dont get people
18  General / Photo Gallery & Videos / Re: pic of the gixx on: April 03, 2008, 12:34:12 AM
ya idk what happened to the link but o well..and i guess the pic gets larger when you click it..i've never had a street bike before and i was really surprised at how far you lean forward..but it's the smoothest machine i've ever ridden and i love it..its all original and it's never been wrecked..i got a steal at $1500..without the title of course..and it actually isn't reported stolen in any of the 50 states..the guy just never passed down the title
19  General / Open Discussion / Re: new to street bikes.. on: April 03, 2008, 12:31:26 AM
thats what i find ironic around my town..the cruisers are older guys and they gas the crap outta them every time they pull away like a drag race ..then the sportbikes slowly accelerate and then rip a wheelie and fly away..or the sportbikes just move slow and quietly
20  General / Photo Gallery & Videos / Re: pics of the gixx on: April 03, 2008, 12:28:57 AM

23  General / Open Discussion / Re: new to street bikes.. on: April 03, 2008, 12:24:32 AM
ya..i figure i'm going to leave it stock because everyone knows how much money these bikes turn out to cost after mods and then return the same price as a stock bike..it has all the power i could use and more..i'll just expect no one sees or hears me
24  General / Open Discussion / Re: REACHING OUT FOR NEEDED HELP.. on: April 03, 2008, 12:22:29 AM
haha, i asked this question over a month ago and someone opened it up again..i was learning about the abandoned title and they said i had to wait like 2 yrs or something and i didnt want to lie on the storage lein because for the extra $100 i'm paying the court, its the true and right way to go about getting my paper work..i'm almost there
