1  General / Where to Ride? / Re: Official Croom Thread on: October 05, 2010, 09:36:35 PM
Can you ride tandem at Croom on a standard atv?  I don't see anything on their web site that says you can't.  I'd like to take my wife for a ride and I don't have a two person atv.

Until somebody gets hurt, of course.
3  General / Where to Ride? / Re: Croom on: November 16, 2006, 01:41:51 PM
I saw two people double riding on a single seater ride right in front of, not one, but two of the park rangers.  They did nothing, as usual.

I think if you ride responsibly with helmets, nobody will say anything to you for riding double, but be advised, it is against the rules to double up unless the quad is built for two.
4  General / Open Discussion / Re: GrizzlyBear's Grizzly stolen on: November 15, 2006, 08:52:34 AM
Sorry.  Can you tell us how it was stolen?  Do you keep it locked up, out of sight, etc?  I keep mine in the garage out of sight and cable locked to the bumper of my Jeep.

There are no former Marines... once a Marine, always a Marine  Cool
8  General / Tech Corner / Re: White smoke in the crankcase... on: August 19, 2006, 10:30:24 PM
I'll probably take it in if it does it again the next time I'm out.  It wasn't smoking out the tailpipe at all.  Just the case vent.  It cleared up after a few minutes.  I don't know how the oil sump works in this thing so I have no idea if this is normal if you stick the nose in the air.
9  General / Tech Corner / White smoke in the crankcase... on: August 19, 2006, 08:50:17 PM
Today while riding my '06 Recon I was going up and down some really steep hills one right after the other being pretty agressive. No problems. When I was done playing, I rode for about 2 minutes going slow. The engine started to sputter like it was out of gas and it died. It wouldn't restart, just turn over. So I pulled the top off the air cleaner box and, POOF, it was full of white smoke. It would then start and only idle when I gave it gas because white smoke was still coming out of the crankcase vent filter. So I ended up disconnecting the crankcase vent hose at the engine and rode it back to my truck for about 10 minutes. When I got back to my truck it was running perfectly fine. So I connected the hose back up and called it a day. Is something wrong or is this normal? What exactly happened? Oh, I forgot to mention that I checked the oil level and it was low. Where did that oil go! Just checked the compression... 185 psi, right where it should be.  No leak down after 1-2 minutes.
10  General / Tech Corner / Re: 2006 Recon - idle speed? on: August 14, 2006, 11:23:32 AM
Thanks, but I'm not talking about installing a tach.  I just want to know where you hook one up so I can fine tune the air screw.
11  General / Tech Corner / 2006 Recon - idle speed? on: August 14, 2006, 09:28:51 AM
Can anyone tell me where you would hook up a tach to check the idle speed on a 2006 Honda Recon? I have the factory service manual, but says nothing about where to connect the tach  Cry
12  General / Open Discussion / Re: Damage Report- Ocala National Forest Big Scrub Area on: August 09, 2006, 12:02:04 PM
Hopefully this link will take you to the most damaging report I have ever seem regarding ATV's.  And sad to say, it is true.

This makes me sad because if we keep people from enjoying the nature areas we have, our future generations will not have the same respect for them.  I think conservation groups are cutting their own throats by banning people from riding.  They need to work with us, not against us.  The sad reality is, I don't think this will ever happen because of inflated egos and cultural differences.

As an example... I am from Tennessee.  We had a riding area along the river bottoms for years.  They closed it because they said it was damaging the area.  Years later they made mountain bike trails out of it.  They closed it again saying the mountain bikers were too dangerous for the hikers.  Well, it didn't take long for the trails to get completely overgrown and impassable.  Since nobody was using it anymore... they cleared it and built strip malls backing up to the river.

Another example... we had an unofficial riding area just like North Port.  Trucks, 4wheelers, etc.  Of course, we had idiots that would dump trash, stolen cars, shoot, build bon fires, etc.  Well, they closed that area.  Did that stop the idiots?  No.  Instead, they now trespass on private land doing the same crap.

We MUST work together.

I bought the Garmin GPS MAP 76 its great.

I was looking at something like the Garmin etrex Legend... the blue one or the Magellan explorist 210.  I can't decide which one I should get. I know Garmin has a great reputation, but I would need to buy a $30 USB adapter for it and it only has 8mb of total memory. the Magellan has a USB cable and has 10mb of maps loaded with 22mb of additional memory.  I am completely confused.  Huh

UPDATE..... I got too itchy and bought the Magellan Explorist 210 at lunch.  Looks pretty cool so far.

GPS is a great investment. I just bought one just for Croom and I didn't get that lost there due to my ATV having a little bit of trouble. Yes I saw plenty of bikes there plenty of whoops for everyone.

What GPS unit did you get and how did it work out there?  I'm thinking of buying one this week.  What happened to the Artic Cat?
15  General / Open Discussion / Re: Croom on: July 30, 2006, 08:15:34 PM
A red Honda Recon.

Did you get lost?  I still get turned around.  I plan to buy a GPS so I can find my way around better.
16  General / Open Discussion / Re: Croom on: July 30, 2006, 12:39:04 PM
I'm pretty sure I saw the two of you riding around...

She didn't loose a cell phone did she?  I found one on the trail, called "dad" and he said it was his daughters phone and he would get back with me.  Haven't heard anything.  I should've turned it in to the rangers at the gate, but I forgot...
17  General / Open Discussion / Jetting my Recon on: July 29, 2006, 05:57:31 PM
I took my brand spankin new recon out for the 2nd time today. I noticed when I would gear down a hill, I would get smoke out the tail pipe.  When I got done riding, the tail pipe had a ton of black soot in it.  Is it normal to have to re-jet a stock Recon?  Also, it has been hard to start when it is cold. No joy at all when I pull the choke up. When it's warmed up it will completely die if I pull the choke up. Sounds like it's running too rich, right?  I haven't looked at the spark plug yet...

Update: The spark plug was black. I looked at the air filter and the thing was saturated with filter oil. I cleaned it and lightly oiled it. Hoping that was the reason it was running rich.

Update #2: I pulled the slide out to see what position the needle was set... it's a non-adjustable needle. I attached a picture.

21  General / Open Discussion / GPS - which one? on: July 21, 2006, 12:15:20 PM
I'm thinking about getting a handheld GPS so I can find my way mostly around Croom and find my way back to cool spots.  What do you guys recommend?  I was looking at a Garmin eTrex Legend.  I want to stay under $150.

Oups... guess I should've done a search first.  Pretty much found what I wanted to know by searching Embarrassed

23  General / Open Discussion / Re: Best way to secure your ATV? on: July 18, 2006, 03:57:15 PM
Cool, thanks.  I found some 3/8 vinyl coated steel cable with loop ends.  Now for the lock... any recommendations on brand and where to get one?  Bigger is better here, right?
24  General / Open Discussion / Best way to secure your ATV? on: July 18, 2006, 12:17:55 PM
I keep mine locked in the garage. I have it chained to the hot water heater pipes  Grin

My question, what is the best way to lock it up?  I know if somebody really wants something, they can steal anything.  What's better, a chain or steel cable?  What about locks... is there any type that bolt cutters won't cut?  Is there any type of concrete anchors that would work?

Looking for some good ideas.  Thanks.
25  General / Where to Ride? / Croom- 1st time at Croom, where to go? on: July 14, 2006, 12:18:53 PM
Hey, I'm riding at Croom this weekend and I've never been before. I'm riding a Recon and would like to check out the cool spots first so I don't ride around looking all day. Hills, MUD, etc. Just trail riding...  Which parking area should I stop at and which direction should I head first?  Thanks!

Ahhh... I just saw the Croom google earth thread at the top. I picked out the spots I want to check out.  Thanks to Mr. BoNes for that thread.
