Off-road vehicles recalled after 46 deaths

By NATASHA T. METZLER
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Yamaha Motor Corp. USA recalled about 120,000 off-highway recreational vehicles for repairs Tuesday, after two models were involved in 46 deaths.

The two-passenger vehicles are designed for drivers over 16 years old with valid drivers licenses, although some reported deaths involved younger children who were passengers or who operated the vehicles against recommendations, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the recall.

All Rhino 450 and 660 model vehicles were recalled for repairs designed to prevent accidents that resulted in 46 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The reported deaths occurred between the fall of 2003, when the vehicles were first distributed, through this year.

More than two-thirds of the incidents were rollovers. According to the CPSC many of these involved turns on level ground at relatively slow speeds. A number of incidents also involved riders not wearing seat belts.
The repairs are designed to reduce rollover risk, as well as to improve handling and keep riders' limbs inside the vehicles.

Rhino 450 and 660 owners should stop using these vehicles and call their local dealer to schedule an appointment for repairs. They can also receive a free helmet.

Sales of these vehicles have also been suspended for repairs.

This is the first government recall of this category of recreational vehicle.

For more details, call Yamaha at 800-962-7926.

i think that could play a part also. And i thought all the recall was half doors?? the article makes it sound like alot more

Dude! If this is not your first time for same or similar DANGEROUS deed you NEED to do more than just pay a fine! It's obvious that you haven't learned from the first ticket maybe you would learn form license suspension??? I would hope so! I find it really hard to believe that any speed limit drops from 60 to 40 with no advance warning. Heck even in Waldo the speed is clearly posted and steps down by 5-10 miles an hour gradually. You need to learn to pay ATTENTION! A $300 ticket would get most responsible drivers attention but it sure hasn't seemed to get yours. I hope you learn your lesson before you injure or kill yourself or worse an innocent driver in your way!
If you were talking to me it was my first timed pulled over, first ticket. Ive since slowed it down, and havent been pulled over since.
I was just saying i was straight up and honest with the judge and he took notice.

Im not the one doing 93 in a 60 if you got us 2 mixed up??
3  General / Open Discussion / Re: help with ticket on: December 25, 2008, 11:44:19 AM
I would get a ticket lawyer. He/she will negotiate the fine and penalty down for you. The lawyer will also go to court for you. You don't have to do anything but pay them their fee and what ever the court cost and ticket amount. It's definitely worth it. Without a lawyer you don't stand a chance. They will hit you with the maximum fine and penalty.
Thats not true.
I had to go to court for a 33 over (limit dropped from 60 to 40 for a bridge and didnt notice) with no lawyer and the judge gave me the minimum $303 fine and 4 hour traffic school. I had no points or tickets, first time getting pulled over, I was straight up and honest with the judge and admitted i was wrong and made a mistake. Max penalty and fine was $500 and i believe they could have suspended my license.

i have a verizon g-z one and its pretty rugged.
it can go in water for 30 minutes and it can take pics/vids underwater
and ive just pitched it at the ground to see if it would break and it didnt so ima have to say its pretty durable lol

it was pretty cheap from what i remember too. only drawback is its ugly as hell
ya i think i paid 70 for mine (plus 2 yr contract)
and 2nd that it is one helluve ugly phone
6  General / Open Discussion / Re: indestructible cell phones on: June 06, 2008, 11:40:54 AM

you got a v8 w/ stock exhaust  Bang Head
atleast rip itoff till you can git duals
haha im not real worried about it. im not always a fan of hacked exhaust
There's a lot better things you can do with $1700. You can have gas for a month. I like the ones you already have. If you scratch those outside lips, they look like crap forever.
yea good point. i spend about a lil under $300 a month on gas and i do a lil over $100 a week at my job (20 something hrs a week). so the rest usually covers insurance. i have to do side things to get "extras" for my truck
Keep what you have. I dont know who decided to bring the ghetto to 4x4s but I wish they would take it back.  Those grapplers are crazy loud too.
yea im not a huge fan on grapplers, i just couldnt decide on wheels. Ill keep mine, they are a classic look. i called the guy today to let him know that im not going to get them. when these bfgs wear out i want to get atzs or toyo m/t to get a more agressive look
thanks for all the opinions Grin

keep it put aside for your tranny replacement coming soon. my sisters just went out in her ranger and the guy we took it to said he works on a ford tranny every day. if its an automatic.
all depends on how it was taken care of.. mine was alwyas adult driven up to 125k. now its 135k and hasent changed. i know ppl with 185k on an orig tranny. but mine could very well be going out. like i said idk how it was treated for the 125k. i have enough extra to cover 2/3 tranny right now so ill worry about the other 1/3 when the time comes. and the money i would put towards the tires i think im gona sit on it for now. maybe get a few small things.or maybe a train horn Shocked lol
thats not good. im looking into tranny coolers so that may help

ford auto trannys build up pressure when they get hot and eventually a seal will go out to relieve the pressure.

No. Those look way to ghetto. Take your $1,700.00 and invest it in a CD or an E Trade account or something.   Wink

This was my first idea when I read your post.  If you save now at your age you will stress less as you get older.  Get another CD then for $1500 and then you can waste the other $200 and still feel like you did something fun.
ya i see what your saying. the 3k is my start towards college

13  General / Open Discussion / Re: need opinions on this.. pics inside.. on: June 05, 2008, 06:51:56 AM
THINK OF HOW MUCH THOSE 20 IN TIRES WILL BE TO REPLACE OVER YOUR 17 IN TIRES  JUST A THOUGHT
keep it the way it is
It'll look like every other Ford on the road!!
thats all what i was thinking too.
esp your comment scratchup. my truck is fairly unique, and you cant get my rims anymore, everybody has them but like said everyone is going to 20s....
14  General / Open Discussion / Re: need opinions on this.. pics inside.. on: June 04, 2008, 10:54:34 PM
Go for it. They will look good on there even though its a ford. Wink
since its a ford itll look even better Shocked
15  General / Open Discussion / Re: need opinions on this.. pics inside.. on: June 04, 2008, 10:35:07 PM
for my truck? alot. but its pretty much set up how i want it, but ive kinda always want 18s or 20s. other than that nothing rly. 4wheeler is how i want it too.

it seems like a good deal, b/c the tires/wheels are next to new, and when its time for new tires on the 17s, they will be about 12-1300..
16  General / Open Discussion / need opinions on this.. pics inside.. on: June 04, 2008, 10:28:37 PM
should i put these

on this?

the tires and wheels at top are 33" mud grapplers on 20" helo max wheels.
and the truck had 35" bfgs ( they run more like 34s) on 17" eagles
i can get the tires at top for $1700. they have 3000 miles and are in excellent shape, and the rims also only have 3k.

i was wondering how everyone would think they would look on my truck..
just want some opinions!!! and is that a good deal?
17  General / Open Discussion / Re: APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO DATE MY DAUGHTER on: March 24, 2008, 09:42:21 PM
haha ive seen those before, my ex showed them to me lol.

i would fail the first one b.c of my truck and oversized tires. ha
18  General / Open Discussion / Re: What would you consider a lot of miles on an atv on: March 24, 2008, 09:39:38 PM
thats not too bad if taken care off

my 05 2x4 rancher had 9500 miles on it b4 the screen was broke from a rollover accident. Im guessing it had about 10k. only thing i changed was oils, 1 or 2 sets of brakes, and a few bearings. ran perfect after all those miles too. I always took care of it and kept up with maintnece
my dads 05 rincon has 1400 miles
and my rubi has 2400. all run perfect
well the rubi has a messed up tranny due to common oil pump failure on the 01 and 02 rubicons..

20  General / Open Discussion / Re: Year, Make, Model, Mileage, and engine size of your truck pics welcome. on: March 23, 2008, 04:30:04 PM

well at least you found your problem ida lol!
I rented a ball joint press today, goin to have a look at it here in a lil bit
24  General / Open Discussion / Re: need help with doing ball joint on my truck on: January 07, 2008, 10:53:36 PM
idk how to describe it, but im really thinking wheel bearing, ive had my share of them go out on our hondas.

what else could it be? It has to be something in the drive line, b/c the slower you go the slower the noise, the faster  the louder "faster" the noise.. oh and only driving in a straight line..  and sounds like its coming from the left front wheel

and i sprayed some pb blaster around the hub nut to get it to stop making noise so bad so i can get to work and it did stop making noise for a lil while
25  General / Open Discussion / Re: need help with doing ball joint on my truck on: January 07, 2008, 09:36:30 PM
i believe the new one i got is greasable.. umm i didnt plan on bushings but you never know.. something is squeaking really bad like a wheel bearing now so urgh..
