I never got it off, I sold it in that state of disrepair. If I had seen those ring nuts though, I would have tried to get those off. Soak it in PB Blaster every day for a week.

Anywhere in the Appalachicola National Forest, there are many unnumbered trails to ride on. Before I broke my rearend, I would just head into the forest from Aenon Church Road, and meander around. There are also many entry points (to unnumbered trails) off of Highway 20, all along the South side of the road. Befriend a local redneck, they'd show you the way.

ATVs are allowed on any pre-existing trail in the Appalichicola National Forest. No trailblazing, and no riding on numbered county roads in Leon county, no riding in wetlands, anything else is legal. I'm not sure if it's worth the trip or not, but you can't say there's "nothing" in North Florida.

General / Tech Corner / Not sure on the year of my Big Bear, trying to find the right part

I'm trying to find a used differential and axle for my Big Bear 350 4x4. I was told it's a 1995, but everything I find for the '95 shows a disc brake in the rear. Mine has a drum brake. Now I'm looking for a rear diff. The guy at the Yamaha dealer said one from a '95 or a '96 should work, but bikebandit.com is showing two totally different part numbers. I found a potentially awesome deal on ebay ( clicky), that's supposed to work for a '96 Big Bear, but the image throws me off. If what looks like the breather hole is in the right place, that would make the diff totally backwards from mine. In the pic, if the breather hole is the top, that means it mounts to the swingarm on the left side. Mine mounts on the right. Any input is appreciated. If I can't get a clear answer, I may just bite the bullet and buy it anyway. A new one from Yamaha is $631. Ebay diff: '96 rear end from bikebandit:

I cannot remove the rear from the swingarm, I've already tried. To remove the rear carrier from the driveshaft, it has to slide to the rear; the rear axle prevents it from moving to the rear. I suppose I could remove the entire rear swingarm, pull the driveshaft out, then cut off the studs that hold the rear carrier to the rear swingarm. That would allow me to crack it open and pull it apart, with the axle still in place.

that axle look's like it removes to the left so you would hit it in the right side but I have done several yamaha champ and bager rear axles and the ring gear has a snap ring and thrust washer attaching it to the axle and must first be removed befor the axle will "just pull out" and by the picture the big bear rear looks the same and probley suffered the same fate stripped ring and pinion gear's
steve
Which side would the snap ring and thrust washer be? I don't see it on the diagram, and I don't see it on the axle itself.

Update, still no good. I removed the bearing on the brake side, and dug at the rubber seal on the left side, still no signs of a snap ring, collar, nut, or anything holding it in place. I'm thinking the splines are twisted somehow. I still don't know how to get it out though, even if I do drop the $1,000 for a new axle and diff. I'm guessing I'd have to cut the axle somewhere.
What a bummer, I only paid $2,000 for this thing. I've been looking at e-bay every day for spare parts, to no avail.

Oh, and I don't think I'm going to heat it up. Just thought about it, it's an aluminum case filled (or coated, if I drain it) with oil. What exactly am I supposed to heat up?
I'm leaning towards borrowing a sledge hammer from somebody.

I actually meant from the left side, but it doesn't matter, I hammered from both sides.
I could only find a rubber seal on one side, and didn't see a snap ring on the other either.
After looking at some pictures, it looks like the axle is just supposed to have spline teeth (or whatever you want to call it) on the middle there, and it should slide right out from the rear casing. The damage may be to those teeth, which may also keep it from sliding out. I dunno, I just guessing.

General / Tech Corner / can't remove big bear rear diff

'95 big bear 350 4x4 I have something wrong in the rearend. I'm trying to remove the rear axle and diff casing without removing the swingarm (which wouldn't make a difference anyway, if the swingarm was removed).
The service manual says to hammer the axle out from the right side. I've hammered and hammered, but it hasn't budged a bit. What am I doing wrong?

General / Tech Corner / Re: Anyone installed the warn winch upgrade, from A2000 to 2.5ci?

Well, that was not quite easy. I decided to mount the junction box (or whatever that this is called, where all the wires go to) inside the storage box. I drilled 4 holes to mount it to the top of the inside of the box, and drilled holes in the side of the box for all the wires to go into. I routed all the wires under the seat and gas tank, you can't see any wires at all unless you crouch down and look up. Very professional job, if I do say so myself. I'm going to go back and use some silicone sealant where the wires go into the box, make it all waterproof.
I'm glad I did this, I had to use the winch 3 times my first time out in the woods! These blackwater tires suck.

A flyer in my credit union (and I've seen at several stores) state that by law, in order to use your credit card, it must be signed on the back. You can, however, sign it and put "see id" next to you signature.
However, all I use is my Visa debit card, and maybe 1 out of 10 places checks ID, or even checks to see if there's a signature.

General / Open Discussion / Leaving a trailer chained to a tree?
|
on: March 23, 2006, 10:55:23 AM

My friend has a wrangler, and we want to take the big bear out (in the national forest) on a trailer hitched to his wrangler, then take the wrangler and big bear off road. So what do I do with the trailer? chain it to a tree? Is it common to leave it sitting, then come back and get it later?
