General / Open Discussion / Re: Airboats?

Is anyone on here into airboats? Me and my family used to be real big into them about 8 years ago. Then got into to buggys, and that moved into quads. I'd kinda like to get back into them. Are they laws real strict with them? Is their many areas to go with them? I was only about 8 when we sold them so I don't remeber much thats why I'm asking all these questions. Also if you have one post pictures please. The problem with the people who oppose airboats, they buy waterfront property often site unseen or view during the day while most airboaters are still working. Then after they get moved in, they hear a noise that is not as peaceful as they expected and want to pass laws opposing the airboats. Most of these people have been here un der 5 years. A fracion of the time the airboats have been operating in these waters. When our county looked at enacting a noise ordinance the sheriff stepped up and said the ordinance would be nearly uninforceable and they didn't do anything. I think the county airboats would have even had a difficult time passing the db requirements.

They used to take the VIN ......04/05 when i went thru the gates (b4 i had my sticker) The lady in the both infact asked me for a title for each one of my bikes .said the bike must be titled bottom line ...just call and ask for yourself ...you should have your bikes/quads titled for proof of ownership ....going to croom or not
2 weeks ago I took 2 atv's through, no title, just vins. Last week we took a 3rd bike through, no title, just vins. Last year we took 4 bikes through, no title, just vins. I have ridden there off and on for about 23 years and have never given a title at the gate.

Your quad or bike must have a title to ride on State land......Take your bill of sale to the tax office and they will run the VIN numbers from the frame ....if everything is clear they will give you a temp title that will get you in Croom. Then you will get the Title in the mail a couple weeks later.Croom is a fun place to camp and ride . My family and I go there once a year in early April.
If you follow these directions be prepared to pay a sales tax for the purchase price. You do not need a title!! Write down the VIN from your frame. Give that, your DL and $40 to the front gate and you will get a sticker. YOU DO NOT NEED A TITLE!!

When was the last time a ranger knew what was going on? LOL!
You got that right. I camped there this weekend and we took the camper early Fri to get a spot and didn't make it back down Fri because of the weather reports. When we went Sat, my buddy needed his sticker and we told them we already nhad a site and the camper was there. 2 different rangers started to argue over what it takes to keep a site reserved. 1 said as simple as securing your atv to a tree another said they could cut the atv loose and someone else could stay there. The first made a good point that if you came in a van, were staying in the van and had to leave for the store or a restaraunt what else could you do?

For a bike Croom isn't the best place. Too much sugar sand IMO. Try to find someplace closer to Northport. Or try down south. -Mark
I disagree. I was just there Thursday and there are alot of trails that are only wide enough for 2 wheels. In fact there were still makers out from the last FTR event there. Seemed like a fun course to ride a dirt bike. I would also look at the cost per trip and consider that a day pass would cost at least $10, if not more. Whwn I go to Windrock the day passes are $15. A 3 day trip costs nearly as much as Croom.

It references contacting marine patrol. Is this a legal riding area? It is actually very close to where I am. I believe it is Dixie Hollins, out by the old Hollinswood Ranch.

By "law" you are required to pay sales tax after purchasing out of state. That said, all you have ever needed to get your permit for Croom is a VIN, DL and $$.

I've been there a couple of times. Is there any good hills to climb anywhere out there?

Haven't been to Tellico yet. I want to try it. My cousin has cut in and performed maintenance on alot of the trails in both Tellico and Windrock. He recommended we do Windrock. It is geared much more to the ATV rider. Most of the trails in Tellico are for jeeps.

Not sure right in Gatlinburg, but Windrock is awesome!! 72000 acres of mt riding. It is about 1.5 hour from Gatlinburg. $15 for the day and passes can be purchased right there at the snack shack. Check out there web site and forum for info on good trails and all. I will definately be going back in the spring.
