General / Open Discussion / Re: 250rs???

Honda stopped production of the 250R because of the costly payouts from lawsuits, which were being awarded by the court system who would not put fault on the responsible parties for injurying and killing themselves. There was absolutely no Govt. ban on them. How could Suzuki make a 250R up until 1992 then? I did extensive research on this, mainly because I started riding in 1984 and owned 250R's throughout the late 80's up until a few months ago and was curious about the same thing.
Most of the lawsuits that I researched showed irresponsible owners who would ride recklessly, let their kids or friends ride it recklessly, usually without a helmet (of course), and someone would end up getting killed or seriously injured. Guess who the injured party or thier family would blame? The deep pockets of Honda and other ATV manufactuers. Because the ATV had 4 wheels and looked "deceivingly harmless", it was the manufactuers fault for the roll overs and riders not being aware of how to ride it properly, and courts were awarding substantial amounts of money to victims and their families, who took no responsibility for what happened. The courts would not always rule that it was 100% the manufactuers fault, but would say that, for example, Honda was 50% responsible for what happened when someone was killed, which would still net huge amounts of money to the winner. Enough was enough, and Honda decided not to produce the 250R anymore. Kawasaki followed, and Suzuki stuck it out until 1992, and decided to pull production. I think Suzuki pulled production because sales were not that great, and practically no one raced the Suzuki on the Grand Naitonal circuit because the Honda was so much better. On top of that, during that time Import taxes skyrocketed, and the prices of the LT250R's were getting ridiculous for that time period, sending them out of production.
One of the lawsuits I remember pulling up in nexxus/lexxus regarding the Honda 250R involved a 15yr old kid riding a 250R into an intersection and getting killed by a car heading from the side. The court decided in the favor of the parents of the dead child, even though THEY were the ones who were neglegent to trust thier kid, who obviously didn't know how to ride, with a race type ATV.
I think its just as ridiculous as smokers sueing tabacco companies or fat people sueing McDonalds, but it happens, and it destroyed the ATV world at that time.
Thank god we're back into time of having newly developed, progressing technology, race bred ATV's!! Those of us who raced quads and lived performance ATV's in the 90's and early 2000's thought we'd never see the day!!

Hi there, I'm looking for others to ride with Saturday Morning at Croom, I plan to be there when it's cool at around 8am and ride till noon or so, depending on how hot it gets. I have a new '06 YFZ that only has 2 hrs on it so I am still going through break-in, which means I just want to do some leisure cruising. I have over 20 yrs riding experience on quads, so no worries there, only the quad is new Send me a PM, I look forward to meeting anyone who wants to ride....

You guys are killing me. I guess for this to be even, the price would have to be per rider, then including whether you camp or not, etc. I meet my friends up at croom to ride from tampa, pay $20 gas for quad, $20 gas for SUV (tampa to croom is only 45 mins) and I pack my cooler with drinks I already had in my fridge (hmm, 25 cent sodas, a few gatorades, water, free ice from my freezer that I packed during the week) and then make a few sandwiches from the lunch meat I already have. Add a bag of chips for $2. Or you could even hit Mcdonalds outside of croom and get $.99 double cheeses if you wanted to save a little scratch! On top of that, i would have eaten and drank at home anyways, so I don't really include that as an "extra expense because I was riding". If you were going to grill out at home anyways, grilling at camp is not really an extra expense, at least I don't think so. And if I wasn't driving up to croom and riding, I'd be cruising around town doing things anyways, and woudl prob. burn more gas than I would at croom in the long run! So I don't think I spend like all you guys do, and its not like I don't like to spend money or eat well either!!

General / Open Discussion / Re: Good Quality Flatbed Trailers- what brands? Looking at Triple crown
|
on: August 07, 2006, 09:47:59 PM

I have a Triple Crown trailer and they are good trailers for the price. I got a 6x16 at R&R for $1100 tandam w/ 15'' wheels. You have to touch them up once in a while. I also had a Po-Boy which was a good trailer too. I looked at the Emerson's and they were not as well built as the Triple Crown in my opinion.
Where's R&R? I'm looking for a dealer who carries Triple crown.... Thanks!!

General / Open Discussion / Good Quality Flatbed Trailers- what brands? Looking at Triple crown

I'm looking at getting a 6X12 or possibly 5X13 or 5X14 flatbed/open type trailer with gate, and was wondering what are the quality brands that are out there for a decent price.
I"ve looked at some cheaper ones, mainly the new ones you see in the paper for $850, but they have very little paint on them and look like they will rust fast. I saw one on a dealers lot that he had been using that was rusted more than I would like to see on a newer trailer, and he told me it was 6 months old. I don't want to haul a rustbucket, and would prefer to spend a little extra on a trailer thats going to be more durable.
I've looked at some Triple Crown trailers, and they appear to be a step above the "cheapie" ones out there, but I haven't seen one that's 6 months old or older since I've been looking. Does anyone know about Triple Crown trailers?
What are the other brands you would recommend? I guess lawn businesses would buy the quality ones, perhaps I need to pay more attention to what they have!!
THanks

General / Open Discussion / Storing quad in Haulmark enclosed trailer- OK or not?
|
on: August 05, 2006, 11:39:41 AM
|
I am looking at a Haulmark enclosed trailer, and I live in Florida (of course), and I was wondering what you guys thought about storing your quad in an enclosed trailer like this. I realize it will get hot, but it does get hot in my garage. I always spray my bike with wd-40 after each ride pretty good to keep moisture off the bike. I should be able to store it under a shade tree, though.
I'm just wondering if this is a good idea or not, I would like to hear from you guys who can tell me more about this... Security is not an issue, they will be secured pretty good in a high security gated business complex, so I am more concerned with the heat/humidity exposure, etc., that I may have to deal with...
Thanks!!

I, too, can't make up my mind for the pipe I want to buy for my '06!! Too many to choose from and it seems like someone has something bad to say about each one!! UGH!
I want one that gives a lot of power (lol, the reason we buy pipes) throughout with more on top end, without breaking the bank.
Also, what do the headpipes add in power, 1HP or so, if any?

I just picked up a copy of Quad for the first time last week, and I liked the content so much that I immediatly subscribed. I've subscribed to Dirtwheels, 4 wheel action, and ATV Sport in the past, but I think I'm sticking with Quad, DW, and ATV Sport and dropping 4 wheel action.
I think Quad has awesome coverage, and if all the issues are like the one I just got it will be my favorite. ATV Sport is a nice change from the ever-so-old layout of Dirtwheels, so I'm keeping it.
I've been subscribing to DW for over 20 years, and like some others on here I think the layout is lame and that they are cheap with all the black&white photos, as well as having terrible quality of print on the photos. If you look at pics of bikes published in Quad and look at pics in DW, Quad magazine looks like HDTV while DW looks like crappy standard TV. Don't believe me? Get an issue of each one and check it out! Quad is awesome!! Dirtwheels needs a serious overhaul for sure...

General / Where to Ride? / Re: Is croom worth it??
|
on: July 11, 2006, 11:32:53 PM

Croom is a great place to ride, but I'd be doing you a dis-service if I didn't tell you that most of the trails are "whoops". This has evolved from the many years of riding that has been done there (I personally like to blame the Motorcross bikes, lol). The maintainance to the trails themselves is non-existent, and there is no quick route from the front day area to the back camping area on an ATV. That being said, there are some smoother areas here and there, and there really isn't a better place to ride in Florida that I can think of. Ocala is not as whooped out, but the camping there is much more primitive. Get ready for a workout on your legs, whoops can work ya like a dog!!
