I agree w/you on the possible causes for backfiring. But remember one thing when working on anything 99% of the time the root cause of the problem is something the owner\previous mechanic did incorrectly. As for the air changing I would beleive that if we lived up north where it gets cold and stays cold, and the unit in question was a 2-stroke but its not. In all my years of wrenching I only came across one bike "2-stroke" that was tempermental to temperature change. It's all good, if he takes his time and cleans the carb real good the problem should be fixed. Then again neither one of us can hear it or see to properly diagnose it.

svt, no disrespect here, but they come a little lean from the factory for emission reasons for importing. If they came over that lean then they would be lined up at the dealer for burnt pistons & valves under warranty.
sources? over 25 years of working on them.

The brake drum is grooved. Go through the the adjustment hole on the drum & back off the shoe adjusters and the drum should come off. If that does'nt work try backing off the bleeder screws and compress the wheel cylinder prying against the brake shoe with a small flat blade screw driver.

I agree w/trx, it's no new model 400 but it 's a very good machine for starters, and there are parts galore for them. As for the seating position when I had mine I shaved the seat alittle bit & put a pair of renthals "w/honda bend" and that made it a little better.

You should'nt have to rejet if it's all stock. If it has a pipe & filter on it then yes you need to rejet. It is possible that he did'nt clean the carb good enough. -Jason

Were they sitting for a period of time before you bought them? Does it idle o.k.? If so I would start with a good carb. clean, cause you said you rode it for about 30 min. then it started acting up thats sounds like something in the float bowl.

Anything can be done. the only problem,is the final drive on these bikes is part of the engine. I don't know if the mounting tabs for a front diff and all associated parts are there. Not to mention the diff lock cable and the four wheel drive cable. You're best bet would be to just look for a old king quad that runs and go from there,or just keep saving money to buy what you want. Go to your local automotive electrical repair shop, they should have a motor that will fit for about 30.00 to 40.00 buck's. It will have the same plug also. Jason

Did you go one size over on the piston and rings, or did you stay stock bore? If you went one size over a hone isnt gonna do it,you have to bore it. If you stay stock measure the ring end gap with new rings and see what ya got,and go from there. Ask your friend's dad he should know what to do.
