General / Where to Ride? / Be careful at 5a
|
on: August 08, 2006, 10:09:42 PM

I was at 5a late saturday night/ early sunday morning, and there where FWCC officers everywhere. We were parked on the Maytown rode side and there was at least 4 officers there. Also there was a helicopter cycling the area and from what the officers told use, and overhearing their radio transmissions there where officers out in the woods to. We got tickets for operating an ATV on a county "roadway" even though our tires never touched the pavement. I also know of at least 2 people that got arrested for DUI and/or possesion of narcotics. They told my friend that the land had been sold and that the new owners didn't want people back there anymore, but they didn't issue anybody tresspass warnings. Was anyone else out there. Does anyone know if there were officers on the 5a side. I'm gonna keep an eye out and see if any signs get posted.

I was going to ask the same question. I was coming up 95 and saw a couple of ambulances and a sherriff as I was passing by. I hate to say it but if someone got seriously hurt this is probably the end of riding at 5a. At least on the BRevard county side.

General / Tech Corner / I'm Smokin, please help

I have an 04 big bear that I think needs rings. It smokes pretty bad when cold if it's been sitting a while. It gets better once it's warmed up, but dosen't go away completely. I know a top end is in the near future but I need to get the bear to last just a little longer. I have been looking at Restore, an addative that I havwe had pretty good luck with in cars. Does anyone know if this is safe to use in an atv. Any suggestions? Thanks.

My Big bear is in need of new front pads. I ride alot of mud and water, so I was wondering which brand would be the best for me. The factory pads lasted a suprisingly long time. But, I'm sure there somehing better out there. I appreciate all of your suggestions.

First of all I would like to thank PBSO for taking an interest in this message board, and posting here. I see this as a positive step towards the future of ATVing in Florida. Once the local governments, law enforcment, and ATV enthusiasts can come together and find some middle ground maybe there will be more places to legally ride in florida. As others have already said, most ATV riders are family oriented, law abiding people, but it's the few that are ruining things for the rest of us. The same goes for the Sheriff's department, A few bad officers can leave a bad taste in the mouth of the public. PBSO seems to be sympathetic to the situation of ATV'ers in Palm Beach County, and any bitterness towards the department shouldn't be directed at him. I have a Deputy in my family (PBSO, if you care to private message me I will tell you who), and he will be the first to tell you that most officers don't enjoy writing tickets and arresting people, however they have a job to do. Even if they don't agree with the rules they are enforcing it is still there duty to do so.

That sucks. At least the dealer had to fix it instead pff coming out of our pocket. I went ahead and put it back in with some threadlock. I'll see how this works. The next step is tapping it out and using a pipe plug.

General / Tech Corner / Differential plug is stripping

The oil drain plug on the front differential off my Big Bear is stripping out. The plug itself is fine, its the case that is stripping out. I can still thread the plug in, and get it tight enough to not leak. However it feels soft and won't tighten like it should. I am considering using a heli coil, or maybe taping it and using a pipe plug. Any Suggestions? Thanx.

I am not new to the Ocala National Forest, however, after recently purchasing a camper trailer, I am new to camping in the forest. Is there any good campsites other tha big scrub that you can ride quads striaght from camp onto the trails? I am looking for someplace that either has electrical hookups or no rules on how late you can run a generator. Anyone know of such a place?

If any one is interested I am heading out to the prairies Saturday afternoon around 3 or 4. So far it's just me and a friend that are going. It would be great to get some more people. If I don't get a chance to check back before I head out I will be driving a silver 4x4 F350 crewcab, and will be riding a big bear and my friend will be on a yellow 400ex. Hope to see some of you out there.

Sounds like a good ride, I'm hoping to make it. I'm also gonna try to make it to the next MSG. How far is 3 lakes from WPB. I have a few freinds that used to hunt up there but I have never been.
