We ride ONF (they have a large trail system there), as well as Brooksville (Croom), and we also are part owner of some land in Holopaw south of 192 just off of 441. We also go to Georgia, South Carolina and last year went to West Virginia to the Hatfield McCoy trail system. Take time to voice your opinion to open more riding areas (whenever the chance arises)

General / Racing Scene / Re: Thumb Throttle or Twist?

Thanks for the lead on the thumb extender. I'll give that a try. I've got carpeltunnels too.....it was just weird. My mind knew what my thumb needed to do....except I couldn't get my thumb to do it. Same deal on the grip. Good grip on the left handle bar and at times, virtually none on the right. I typically ride 1 full day every two weeks. Probably not enough to keep the thumb in shape Thanks for all the advice Kevin

General / Racing Scene / Thumb Throttle or Twist?
|
on: October 17, 2006, 09:42:47 PM

I've always used a thumb throttle on my four wheelers but I've really only trail ridden or ridden hard for short burst of 20 or 30 min. I rode the hare scramble at Madison 2 weeks ago and found that my thumb was really getting cramped up......towards the end, I couldn't even make my thumb do what I wanted it to and was wrapping my fingers around the bars using them to pull the throttle. javascript:void(0); I was wondering what others experiences have been with thumb vs. twist.javascript:void(0);

Heading up to the Rattler Hare Scramble this weekend and am trying to get an idea of what kind of tire pressure to run. Not sure of the terrain there so I was wondering what you guys have been successful in the past with. I'll be running stock Dunlop Radials on my Z400 in the beginner class.
Thanks

Brevard County. I agree with Muddy Buddy. Open the "Hole in the Doughnut"....AKA "Black Hole" It's in Palm Bay. Centrally located with respect to the entire east coast of FL. Lots of vacant land with a significant portion of it owned by the city of Palm Bay, as captured as part of the General Development Corp. bankruptcy. Would be a great place to develop a trail system.
For you Google Earthers and GPS folks here are the coordinates:
27 deg 56' 43.36" N 80 deg. 42' 17.69" W
2nd Choice would be Port St. Lucie

First thing, pull the plug. Make sure its clean and you have spark. If you have spark, make sure your gas is turned on and the plug is getting gas (ie wet). These are the first basic things to check.

Thanks Kenz,
I'm going to go ahead and call HMF tomorrow and have them ship me a quiet core...with any luck I can get it here before Friday. I was trying to avoid driving from central Florida to the pan handle only to be turned away and not get to run. To be quite honest I hadn't given it too much thought until I caught this thread. I appreciate the info and hope to be running quietly this weekend.

Polaris 800
Much better 4 wheel driver (turns off the fronts at higher speeds when not needed and has better handling on the trails (with turns). The differential to switch to full lock is much more sensitive than the other big 4X4's. The suspension handles rough terrain better with a lot less unwanted feedback through the steering to the handlebars. I know the 800 wasn't one of your choices, but you should check it out.

I've got about 60 hrs. on my HMF (Full System, not a slip on) and am going to the HS this weekend and wanted to know what the DB limit is? Do you guys know the protocol if you test and you're too loud? Does anyone else have any experience with this pipe and what they've tested? Should I bring my original pipe with me? I'm not currently running the quiet core. Just the standard spark arrestor.
Thanks
Kevin

General / Racing Scene / KFX450 Pic's and Specs

For those of you getting ready for a new quad this upcoming year, you may want to hold off for a little while longer. Here's some pics' and info on the KFX450. The first link has the most pics I could find and the 2nd link has specs vs. the Suzuki, Honda, and Yamaha 450's. Not sure about the looks yet. It seems to be sitting a bit high compared to the other 450's. However, I can't find a seat height. I do like the fact it has reverse and it's going to get the 50HP plus engine (right out of the box w/FI) the KX450F has.....except it has reverse which I like as well. http://www.atvriders.com/atvmodels/kawasaki2007atvmodels.htmlhttp://kfx450hq.com/comparison.htm

Checking to see if anyones going to go and run the Rattler in Madison on the 7th? If so, do you know where you're going to stay? There are several Motels listed on the flier at both I75 & Exit 5 as well as I-10 & Madison. I'm planning on taking a 1/2 day vacation from work and going up Friday afternoon. I was going to run Vet. Quad but based on reading the reviews of Orlando (I went for the day to check it out but didn't bring my quad) I should probably start out in Beginner 2 (201 - Open) class. Kevin

It's really a shame with these guys. I agree wholeheartedly as every experience at the H.O.P dealership has been disappointing. I've purchased 6 new ATV's in the last 4 yrs. After giving them chances, I found that ARS was the best, so that's where I went. Since I live in PB, I still go there for maintenance stuff like parts, oil, filters, etc.... which takes significant time for the service associate to identify correctly, locate in stock, and ring me out. I went there to get a new set gloves a few weeks ago and they only had one color in stock. With all those bikes, ATV's, UV's, etc... you'd think they'd be better stocked. Go back to them and continue to demand reparations; otherwise, they won't change their behavior. Given their locallity and the huge number of riders in the area, they could certainly have a much better business by lowering their new bike prices and improving their service after the sale.

ID@,
Sorry, it was Salt Springs. The number below is for the office you can call which is on 19. However, the cabins are on 314 behind Shell Crackers. We stayed in a two bedroom which came equipped with a full kitchen (minus coffee maker), TV, couches, 3 beds and 1 bathroom. It ran us 90.00 I believe for the night. It worked out really nice. We're going to stay at the resort next time just for comparison purposes. I'll let you know what we think of it.

Just wanted to give everyone an update on where we rode last week. We ended up going to Ocala and staying in silver springs. We rented a cabin for a few days and got a lot of riding in. We had a nice sit down meal at Shellcrackers which was excellent and Wednesday night was all you can eat boiled shrimp. They usually have an evening special so give them a try. It doesn't look like much from the outside but believe me, you won't be disappointed in the food. The trail system is coming along great and I was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't more traffic on it. We only saw 2 other 4 wheelers in the full 2 days we were riding. (After we hit the trails) I don't know how many of you have been up and rode on the systems but I actually preferred it to the free riding we've done out in the Big Scrub area and south of 314. I included a link below where you can go and check out the maps of the new trail system. I'd like to hear how others feel about the trail system so far. http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/florida/news/trails-roads-pil-ocala.shtml

Hello Everyone-
I'm planning a 2 day trip to do some riding this week. I ride at Holopaw, and have been to Brooksville and Ocala but am looking for other places to ride. Trying to stay within 4 hrs. of Palm Bay (East Coast Central FL.) I was considering Big Cypress but was concerned about not having 4 wheel drive and spending all day stuck. My wife and I like to trail ride and are experienced. I have a Z400 and she has a 250EX. Any folks who can post based on experience is appreciated.
Thanks
Kevin

Thanks for the info. I've been all over the internet and can't find any timing chains with links so it looks like I'll have to use the endless OEM.I'm hoping to pull the valve cover and side plates and slide the timing chain down the timing chain passage. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm trying to avoid pulling the head off and the jug out.
Thanks Again
Kevin
