Update- I had Rick look at it last weekend, and he assured me that it was running just fine! The upper end breakup was it hitting the rev limiter. Now I have a suspicion after doing some research, that maybe the reverse limiter was kicking in (while in forward gears) once in awhile, maybe due to it sitting before I bought it. But now it certainly is running nice. Rick was friendly and helpful and I would most certainly see him in the future and recommend him for troubleshooting or performance mods.

Yes, and we are going there tomorrow. It's big, unregulated, sand, woods, mud holes if you want them. No cops.

Wow this board is almost dead, too bad...

Have taken this carb apart now 3 times to verify cleanliness, and its spotless. Engine still starts popping and breaking up as before, at 1/2 throttle in neutral and at full throttle while riding.

Pulled the fuel screw out to 3 3 1/2 turns for kicks and just made meaner popping and backfiring.

Anyone?

So I bought an '04 400 actually a DVX, all stock except for a slipon. Seemed like it was running out of fuel after about 30 sec of wide open throttle, it would die. Would restart after sitting a minute.  Disassembled and cleaned the carb, fuel screw was plugged and at 1 1/2, I set it at 2 1/4. Cleaned tank, replaced petcock and fuel line.

Now, it idles and pulls hard in midrange, but pops and breaks up attempting WOT. While sitting in neutral it starts popping and breaking up at about half throttle, while riding it seems to start when throttle is held open.

Removed the air filter lid, and while in neutral the popping/breaking up starts a little earlier, at about 1/3 throttle.

Is this a lean condition? Stock 130 main jet. Would the simple addition of a slipon and staying with the 130 main cause the popping and breaking up?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Very likely, doing lots of maintenance and repairs to the bikes this week, should be ready for the weekend!

Thank everyone for the replies and I will let you know how it works. Now if I could ask a second question in this same thread

I have a second LTZ250, runs good with mild idling problems which I will attempt to improve with a petcock and carb clean. Now this bike has a performance muffler on it.. Should I change the main jet while I'm in there to richen it some? Any suggestions?

Thank you for the quick and thorough response. I will let you know how it turns out. Btw do you know of problems with the fuel tank valve, I read in another thread that they are problematic and to plug the vacuum line going to it and run it on prime.
10  General / Tech Corner / Suzuki carb question on: April 04, 2011, 07:04:14 PM
LTZ250, 03 but like new condition. Bone stock everything. Several tanks of new gas run through it. This bike is extremely cold natured as far as getting it to idle when cold or warm. After it's warmed up it rides nice, but seems that after a couple hours of riding the idling problem comes back, refuses to idle. If I turn the idle screw up or adjust the cable at the throttle lever (same thing, right?) the idle soars, there is no just giving it a few more idle rpms. Here's something else- when revving it while in neutral, the revs take a long time to come back down to idle.. No, nothing in the cable is sticking, it's something in the tune.

Now I'm sure the answer will be clean the carb, which I am going to do, but I would like to know what I am looking for instead of just cleaning blindly and 'hoping' that fixes it. Thanks in advance.

We had a fantastic time at Omega today, just our type of riding. Some nice twisty woods trails, and plenty of water and mud. We had 2wd sport/trail quads and made it through most of the mud holes with some finese, there were a couple too much for us that would be a thrill for a 4x4 or sideby. Woods are beautiful smelling pines. Lots of interesting scenery. This is not a dry/fast park, it is trail/wet. The pics posted by Juanky depict it quite well but there are more woodsy trails not shown. We will definitely be back!
