General / Group Rides & Events / Hastings or ONF 2/23?
|

Was thinking of riding Centennial this weekend but turns out one of the quads in the group won't be registered in time & another is a single seat w 2 people riding, so I'm eyeing Hastings as a backup plan. Just curious how big the area is and what type of terrain? In videos it looks a lot like Rancho, where I used to ride quite a bit. Our group is a mix of 4x4 and sport quads.

I was at croom on sat. Went to the gate with title and ID in hand to get sticker for my second quad, and the ranger asks me if I want an annual or a day pass? They just started day passes for $15. Instead of the sticker, you get a tyvek wrap (like concert wristband) with the date on it that you attach to handlebars. Guess what else- he looked at the title and ID and said " I won't need those". All I had to do was sign the day's sign in sheet. The prorated sticker was $45 so for me it was a no brainer to go with the day pass.

Thanks everyone for the info. I tend to break stuff faster than I can fix it (or have time to fix it). Anyone know what I mean? So the first order of business is to get my son's Predator 50 up and running. Seems to have lost all spark. After that a TRX450R that needs a carb rebuild and a Raptor 660 that needs some clutch help.

My father in laws's rancher 350es is having some issue with the ES where it won't shift past 3rd. No luck finding anyone in the Keys with the skill set to work on it. Any recommendations for a good Honda shop would be appreciated -anywhere from homestead to ft lauderdale. Thanks!

Trailblazer 330 is a great starter quad. I have one as a 2nd quad & bring it along for family and friends that don't normally ride. Very comfortable ride and suspension, one lever braking & automatic. Top speed is about 45. I bought it new last year from skypowersports for $2999 (3500 out the door) or you can usually find them dirt cheap on Craiglist. If you plan on buying one used make sure you check the axle for unusual movement (bad bearings) and swingarm bushings!!!

Dirt i'm originally from KW so I know your predicament. If you're dying to ride you could go as close as the south side of sugarloaf where the old bridge is on old sugarloaf rd. not many trails tho & youll run into FWC at some point. As far a legal places to ride, that's pretty tough. My in- laws still live in KW so to ride we usually meet at dirty foot in ft Meade, which is about 5.5 hrs from KW. Next time we're going to try L-cross so they dont have to drive as far. Too bad you have to drive at all because back in the day we had an awesome track at army hill on the backside of KW airport - we would ride dirt bikes all the time and were never bothered once!

rancho is on the east side of zhills close to where 54 meets 98. Been many times & here is what i can tell ya: pay to park in the lot on 54; you'll see the sign on fri, sat & sun. I heard all the stories too: people being robbed at gunpoint, break-ins, bin laden hiding out there, etc, but never had a problem. Would I say CWP worthy? Sure, just like all of Florida. Sure you see some shady characters, but overall most people you meet out there are decent folks looking for a place to ride. Terrain is a mix of wooded trails, mud bogs, & wide trails which were going to be the development's roads. No hills and a lot of sugar sand. Many of the trails are whooped, especially the main roads. It's dusty and dry right now so a dust mask is recommended and goggles are mandatory. Around feb- april the place gets really muddy & flooded. Since it doesn't rain much then I think swiftmud has some flood control going on with the lakes on the neighboring property. I would estimate it's about 1500 - 2000 acres. I went last weekend only because I didn't have time to make it to Dirty Foot. If you haven't been, it's worth checking out for a change of scenery.

Don't worry about getting stuck - the road in is asphalt and hard pack dirt. You won't make it far on slicks if you go in the truck mud pit, but DFMR has heavy machinery to extract you & are very helpful when it comes to towing people out. On labor day they had people posted in both mud pits (ATV & Truck) all day doing nothing but pulling people out.

We ride rancho often but have gone to dfmr the last couple times out. The terrain is better (lots of dry trails as well as muddy areas that would swallow your quad) & it's only 45mins further. In fact our group that normally rides rancho is hitting dirty foot again this Sat. If your plans change & you want to ride with us this weekend PM me here. As far as mudding & sport quads...well YFZ can tell you about that. I saw him flying across one of the mud pits on paddle tires a few weeks ago. Made it pretty far too!
