Title: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: Crispy on December 19, 2005, 02:39:29 PM
I don't know if any of you guys are from Orlando or ride in Orlando, but in the Apopka area theres a place called "Keene Rd." Right near the dump if you have Google Earth im sure you can look it up, for now theres no signs posted keeping us out and we havent gotten in trouble for it yet. Its a pretty decent size sand pit where alot of us from Ocoee and Apopka go riding on the weekends figured i'd give you guys a heads up :)

would that be near the landfill or the R/C airplane field?

Its right near the landfill basicly on the other side of the road, I can get an address yes i'll show you on google earth in a second let me get a nice photoshopped image of it for ya.

I see it,,,used to fly my plane over there next to the landfill at the airfield, so I know where it is.

funny why it's not posted,,,wonder who owns it.

well just a heads up, if you look at the pit to the left of it theres a road follow that road down it then towards the end of the road on your left you'll see a trail follow down it to get to the pit.

I wont have my quad back til wedsnday or i'd go out there it show it to ya.

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: sct450 on December 19, 2005, 07:11:11 PM
i think the name of the road is mcqeen go all the way to the end you'll see a long sand drag on the right the entrance is on the right.

from winter garden head towards ocoee on plant street turn left at kangaroo store(old handy way)stay on that road till you pass binion rd. then it's your first right.keene rd.go threw the first stop sign then it's a mile or so on your right.straight acroos from the dump and r/c airport.

they do close it down from time to time but always open it back up.if you go over to the sand drag turn right follow the fence line there are a few trails back in there.

Post by: sct450 on December 19, 2005, 07:12:55 PM
entrance on the left.... there are 2 of them

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: sct450 on December 19, 2005, 07:17:06 PM
please don't take your trucks back to the pit that is why they close it down from what i've been told just park on the side of the road. the dump does own all that land.there are a couple nice jumps and a few hills to climb if they open that back part up again.

hey fellas, im not familiar with this area at all, im from the miami area myself, but im going to the apopka area for christmas and im picking up the raptor i just bought in winter haven and i would like to take it out for a ride. the only rd im familiar with is the main rd my family lives off of which is Red Bug which is i guess about 4 or 5 miles east of I-4, is this riding area close to this spot and if so, how do i get there?

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: sct450 on December 20, 2005, 11:13:52 PM
it's about 15 or 20 miles from redbug lake rd

take redbug west to 436 turn right stay on that rd until you get to apaopka.turn left on main street go a few miles you'll come to keene rd/sheeler rd turn right onto keene go about a mile or so turn left on mcqueen go to the dead end.

HOW DO YOU get to this sandpit from winter gardens on 50.

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: Crispy on December 22, 2005, 04:31:45 AM
Numster my suggestion is to use mapquest

I should be out there early saturday until about 12 maybe alittle longer.

The riding isnt muddy unless it rains before hand otherwise its sandy and perfect for a sport ATV.

Sounds good Ida looks like itl be a good day of riding, my friends bringing his Z and i'll be riding my 400 hopefully I can get it rejetted before saturday. By the way Ida you seem to know alot about 400's so I have an 05 and im grabbing the HMF slip-on, performance filter, air box lid off, any ideas on the jetting, the pilot jet, and the fuel mixture screw, any ideas on those settings with what im running?

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: Ida_Mann on December 22, 2005, 04:33:10 PM
dude, I can break down the engine in a heartbeat now, but as far as tuning, I leave that to the professionals at ATP in Apopka.  All the work done on my quad has been done there.

As far as the jetting settings and such, give Mike a call at the shop 407-880-3171.

I might try to get out there briefly during the day tomorrow.

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: Crispy on December 22, 2005, 05:33:49 PM
Well hey man im gonna order a jet kit and my exhaust and everything will be here tommrrow (Jet kit, slip-on) Should I call Mike up and try and get a price on labor to tune this thing if I cant do it, I basicly just need to change out the jet, pilot, and get the fuel mixture set, i'm pretty sure I can do it but is there anything else to it?

By the way whats ATP's number any chance they have Jet kits in stock?

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: Ida_Mann on December 22, 2005, 05:44:15 PM
the number is in the post above yours, I'm sure he'd be able to help and his prices are probably the cheapest labor rates you will find anywhere.

I'll tell ya..it's not legally but I guess some uh well smart/idiotic guy slit the fence (near the abandoned house) which leads to a trail out there.  Nice mud pit out there (the sports can handle it great for donuts etc ;)) A nice jump out there and some of the steepest hills.

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: sct450 on December 24, 2005, 09:52:54 PM
the gate use to be open.we stayed back there.there are a few jumps for beginners(like me)that you can learn on.but there are no big jumps out there.and in the mud watch out for the pvc pipes sticking up.last time i was there is was getting pretty rough.

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: Crispy on December 24, 2005, 09:54:07 PM
Dont think there is any pvc pipes in the mud i was at :o ( to the left of the huge hill in the middle), Gates we're closed have been for a while now sucks :(

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: sct450 on December 24, 2005, 09:59:19 PM
that is where it is.i found out the hard way sticks up just high enough to catch you're toes unless you have nerf bars.it's in the back left hand side right before you get to the little hill by the house.

is the sand pit still a little rough?

Title: Re: Orlando Sandpit
Post by: Crispy on December 24, 2005, 10:04:27 PM
sand pit has smoothed out but still rough, the washout holes are there (someone needss to bring some sand in to fill those in)  uhmmm not much else :) lots of more jumps though thats for sure. They we're building jumps for quads today when i was there.

I went out to the end of McQueen Rd. today and looked around. I was in my Jeep so I didn't go much further than the end of the road. To get to the pit, do you go through the opening in the fence that is to the right?

There's a sign there that says "No Motor Vehicles". It was obvious ATV's have been going through there but I was wondering if the pit is back that way...

I don't plan on taking my Jeep back there...I would be on my ATV.

I was out there with my kids today. I was the big guy on the TRX450R with the scared little girl on the TRX90. She was freaking out with all of the people riding so we went across the street and rode up and down the fence line.

I never thought I would have a daughter that would name her ATV "Baby Cakes".

I'm going back tomorrow with just me and my 14 year old son.

I ride a Stock Red and Black '06 TRX450R and my son rides a Stock '06 TRX250EX.

We wear red, white, and black Fox gear with helmets. I wear a solid matte black Shoei helmet with a crome visor.

We had a blast out there Monday afternoon. There weren't too many people and we ended up being the last ones out there. I just let my son lead and I followed him all over the place. My legs are sore as heck.

Sunday I was pretty disappointed at seeing people drag race down McQueen Rd. Especially wearing shorts and being without helmets. That and dumping is gonna get that place shut down. People just don't get it.  >:(

I could just picture them dragging from the fence towards the trail that goes to the pit and a cop coming over the hill.

Post by: Crispy on January 03, 2006, 01:01:04 PM
Yeah they drag race dow nthe road which is deffinatley stupid, there is places in the pit for that kind of stuff and I personaly love drag racing just not on the road...

Man! I gotta say that place has been getting HUGELY popular latley I cant tell if its a good or bad thing yet I deffinatley dont want to see this place getting shut down.

Deffinatley let me know the next time your out there and i'll keep a look out for ya :) I ride the 05' TRX400EX with Red HMF Pipe, and a Red HJC helmet.

From Apopka / Mount Dora
441 to Claracona Rd (Park Avenue) go right

Take Claracona Rd to Keene Rd. go right

When you get to the Keene Rd Landfill. Start looking for a road on the left called McQueen. Go left.
Take McQueen to the 2nd trail on the left and park. The trail is next to a fence which borders a field.

Take that trail back to the pit.

Well just so yall know the cops came out to the pit and were writing trespassing warrants on saturday. So maybe next time you find a cool place to ride you should keep it on the down low if you get my drift. :(

I'd love to see them try and write me a tresspassing warrant for land they have no right to, I wasn't out there when this happend nor do I believe it did..because CrashKing was out there when they came he didnt say anythign about them writing warrants just telling them to leave..

That land is NOT theirs, the guy who owns the land (That isn't fenced in), is owned buy a guy who rides there himself, he would just like us to keep the place clean and we can ride there all we want.

Just to clear thigns up.

 ;D

yeah i was out there late sunday... was a f-150 police truck drivin around out there... i didn't notice anyone gettin out and writing tickets.... and when i got back to my truck which was on the road a empty crown vic was there... so i don't think they were citing anyone..... besides i saw no, no trespassing signs when i was out there riding where i was

I was there on sunday too and that is when i was told that the cops were out on saturday writing warrants.Im not sure if they were being writin to people in the fenced area or not. I just hate it when a good spot gets closed because of people dumping trash and burning car. If we would take care of the spots we have it wouldnt be so hard to find a place to ride.

The place needs to get cleaned up this is a fact, i'll start helping about that asap, the fenced in area is obviously going to be marked no tresspassing probably where the people we're getting those warrants and if your caught there so be it.

man im constantly out there (like every day) except last weekend.... but anyways im ridin today close to dark and i saw this dude on one of those gay yerf dog atv carts and i start talkin with him, he says he works for the dump and brought his cart to work so he could ride after his shift was over. after ridin and just roostin around with him until it got dark as hes loadin up his gay-cart he says "see that sh*t?" as hes pointing to a giant pile of scrap metal and trash that some dumbass dumped near the entrance...he said that "the only thing they get pissed about is that kinda sh*t"......i dont even own the land and that pisses me off...i swear if i see some solid hillbilly heathen dumping a trailer full-o-crap out there im kickin someones ass...anyways im rambling, i was really thinkin we should organize a clean-up session this saturday starting early around like 10:00am and ending around noon...if we can get 20 people to get involved and bring garbage cans and bags and help clean up for a few hours it would make a huge difference considering that place is starting to look like the dump itself.....if anyone on here is down let me know now so i dont show up bymyself.....i got a 4x4 ford that can probably move that burnt truck over in the corner and that burnt mini van to a more secluded area of the land.........let me know..

Thanks Chris for your help in cleaning up ;)  Hopefully everyone who reads this thread and rides there can maybe take 1 garbage bag home each time they go ride until its litter free. The 2 burned up cars we will have to work on one day when we have a 4x4 truck out there to move them to the side.

Seems odd I know they use it for dumpign dirt into the landfill itself who knows why they we're actually blocking the entrance maybe they left early before they could dump the load at the landfill?

How long have you guys been riding out there? Sounds like it may not be for too much longer if people keep trashing the place.

I live off Ocoee apopka rd and Fullers Crossing. Literally 5 minutes from there. I am just getting started in the hobby and I am still looking for a quad and bike. Is there anything we can do to make sure this riding spot stays open?

If they shut this down, my next closest riding spot that I can see will be at least and hour away.

Well i just got home from the pit . I was there long enough to unload my bike when 2 sherrifs pulled up and told us we had to leave that the county didnt want us out here any longer. I told the cop that we had permision from the owner to ride there and the cop said she didnt care the county didnt want us out there. After that she called in a chopper for the people that were in the pit already and said if they dont leave they will go to jail. >:(

I find it hard to believe that no one has a local legal secured place to ride. Its not like ATV's are a new sport.

Is there anywhere around Winter Garden/Clermont area. I am trying to buy a quad and bike now but theres no way I am going to do that if I have to ride in Ocala or Croom. They are both over an hour and a half away from me in Winter Garden (or so says map quest).

I dont see buying or leasing land as a great idea. Not alot of people that have or are willing to pony up a large amount of cash for a lease or purchase commitment.

What needs to be found is a guy thats land banking and is willing to make some extra cash while he sits on the land. Montly or anual dues that gives you membership to the land.

Thats what the RC boys did, they also have a 1,000,000 dollar liability coverage they get for like 15 bucks a year. It puts the land owners at ease.

Hey guys I'm going to try and get out there to this pit this weekend, my freiond just bought a blaster so I figured I'd take him somewhere new. I ride a yz250f and I don't ride on the roads and I take what I bring in so no trash or nothing. Hopefully the cops aren't out there ruining the fun... what day would have the least amount of people sat or sun?
