Title: Deer heard at croom? Post by: greenmachine on December 12, 2005, 02:56:39 PM I have recently started riding at croom since the start of hunting season. I stay away from ONF during these months for obvious reasons. Every time I go early, I see a few deer, usually 2-4 in a group. Usually always at least one spike buck. Yesterday, my son & I saw at least 12 -15 in a group with a few spike included & the group was being followed by about 6-8 big wild turkeys. It was rainey & cold Sunday morning, but I was amazed to see such a large group of turkeys following the deer. I also came across a handmade metal or welded pipe tree stand in the NW area of the park that was painted camo & strapped to a tree upright. I didnt think anyone was allowed to hunt in the park. No I didnt report it because there is no possible way i would ever find it again. This stand was placed there recently because there were 2 motorcycle tie down type straps holding it to the tree & they looked to be in new condition. I was wondering if everyone see's this group of deer regularly or was this just chance?

Title: Re: Deer heard at croom? Post by: TRX450R_Racer on December 12, 2005, 07:36:44 PM You are allowed to hunt in Croom. Only with a bow & arrow. One day I was riding and saw a guy in full camo with a bow. I went back to camp and told the ranger. That's when, to my surprise, I found out you are allowed to hunt in Croom. I was like there are thousands and thousands of acres to hunt. They can't even give us one place we can ride and call our own.

Title: Re: Deer heard at croom? Post by: Moose on December 12, 2005, 10:00:55 PM My son and I have seen these deer several times. The quads don't bother them to much, we would just ease along and they would keep their distance, but not run off. I guess if you were going fast and making a lot of noise, they would run. Once while there we saw them and my son got off and ran towards them, they were gone in a second. Its funny if we just stayed there with the quads at idle, they would just look at us, I guess to see what we were going to do next.

Title: Re: Deer heard at croom? Post by: Numkut on December 13, 2005, 07:22:34 PM I had a bad experience with deer at croom, my first time at croom I was cruising relatively slow on my newly aquired ttr250 not to far away from day area 2 when I spotted two deer. Well being the nice guy I am I decide to go fullthrottle at them. Well they started running and I kept chasing them till we came out in one of those hard packed areas with the dried up yellow soil and I was focusing then I just sank. I was in a aprox. 2 feet of the goopiest stuff ever. I put my foot down and went to pull up and my shoe just stayed put (before I had boots) my bike just stood straight up with out anything but the mud holding it up. So I took off my other shoe and threw it up on the dry stuff and went to work trying to find my other shoe. Well after some good looking I found it and took the brick of mud and threw it with my other shoe. Being the little fresh out of middleschool freshmen I was I couldn't get that thing out for the life of me. I was trying to floor it then dump the clutch and it just kept sinking deeper and deeper. So finally I just grabed the handle bars and pulled the bike down sideways with me. With much struggle I got that thing pointed perpindicular to the mud with the front tire on hard dirt. I floored it and dropped the clutch and this time it started to move so I kept gassing it then it caught traction and flew out of my hands going on to hit a tree. I go out of the stuff and picked up my bike and I couldn't get it to start, it wouldn't even turn over. So I walked back to camp and got my dad to walk back to it with me and he just turned on the ignition and it fired right up (I guess I was to shooken up to turn it on...). After we got back I just stood in the shower next to the bathrooms for a while and we packed up and left. The moral of the story... I don't chase deer anymore.

Title: Re: Deer heard at croom? Post by: raptor426 on December 15, 2005, 08:12:16 AM I've seen a big heard like that there before. Once by the front pit, next to the fire lane.
Title: Re: Deer heard at croom? Post by: DZ 350 on December 15, 2005, 03:15:09 PM i have seen deer there before like in a group of 8 or 10 so we decide to follow them and we got lost again.
Title: Re: Deer heard at croom? Post by: TRX450R_Racer on December 15, 2005, 03:22:51 PM Croom is so small it is hard to get lost. Just follow the fence line.
