CPSC Considering To Propose New ATV Laws To Ban Sales of ATVs to Users under 16
Federal safety experts want to keep children from hopping on an adult-sized ATV.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission  (CPSC) is reviewing current ATV regulations and considering asking Congress to ban the sale of ATV's to people who plan to allow children under the age of 16 to ride them.
Although no proposal has been issued to Congress in Washington D.C. at this point, the group is taking a "top to bottom look" at all possible ways the CPSC can help make ATV's safe for kids.
One of the reasons for this is that, nationwide, about 120 children die each year on ATV's.
The CPSC is considering several other proposals, including making it mandatory for dealers to provide death and injury statistics to people buying an ATV. The group is also trying to decide if mandatory safety training is necessary.

I don't think it is a good idea at all. If I was 14 or 15 I would not ever want to be riding a little 90cc ATV. Now granted I didn't get my first ATV (Blaster) untill I was 16, but that was because I had just gotten interested in it. I know for a fact that almost all kids 14-15 would never be caught dead learning on a 90cc. Some kids are huge for their age too..Could you imagine a 6+ foot tall person riding a 90?  :-\

I bet out of the 120 who died not one of those deaths was on a properly sized bike with the rider wearing the proper safty gear.

My 14 y.o. son is 5' 10" and wears a size 12 shoe. How about some sort of  height/weight/age consideration. He wears all of the safety equipment religiously and handles his Raptor 350 better than adults do! He's done the Seminole Mx and Durhamtown Mx tracks and we'll be ther again from Dec - 26-30th . According to the OEMs, he should be on a 90 cc ATV and at the same time the OEM allows him to ride a 125 cc drit bike. The current OEM recommendations make little sense, unless you've never ridden.

Now i wouldnt say an age/height/weight consideration. That is only a small part of being able to handle ANY atv. Granted it helps allow you to throw the bike around it doesnt mean much with the engine displacement of the atv. I just turned 15 three and a half monthes ago, and riding a 400 since i was 13 i think. Not sure. A lot of the factor that should be taken into consideration is the mental capabilities of the operator. For all i care it could be a 35 year old but if he doesnt know when enough is enough or his limits it will do nothing. The kid may also not know how powerful the machine really is and not respect the power of it. If anything, you should be able to by a vehicle over 90cc either with a test being taken and passed by the operator along with a parental conscent form saying they are allowing there underage son/daughter to operate an ATV over 90cc. Cause there is no way in hell i would fit on a 90cc. This way taking the test the kid didnt just talk their parents into the deal saying oh ill be cautious with the vehicle and ill wear a helmet yada yada yada. Now that wont eliminate all problems, but this way if it does happen to be a death the parents are the ones who took the gamble and signed a paper saying so. Rambling on yeah i think so time to shut up. lol Dont know where that post went to.

 curtis has a point, if we have control over our actions, let it be. i refuse to ride a yfz 450 basically because i dont think im experienced enough,i tried once and ended up on the grab bar takin a sh!t. them things are powerful.
